Recommended Posts

looking to add a nice home theater setup along with a sub, im into good lows and very powerful bass in movies and music

what would be a good driver+amp combo?

im guessing i would have to buy a amp, no receiver would put out enough power i wouldn't think

And the budget for the amp?

Are you building your own enclosure?

Really liking the lows and a low budget are counter productive, but let us know the whole deal and we will work with you on getting the best solution possible.

This isn't very nice of me, but I personally would take your $600 budget and find another $200. If so you can really, really make a monster setup with:

and this:

It would pretty much destroy any $600 setup, however, if you need to stay closer to budget you could surely get the same amp and a used Rlp12" for pretty darn near your budget or save a little and get the 500w version for $100 less.

*warning, the 18 will take a pretty large box.

I should have asked for more enclosure specifics like how much space you were willing to part with. If you don't have much floor space, perhaps a sonotube?

Yes, Jonh makes some quality drivers. But the IB15 was created for specific applications - infinite baffle. Yes, the thermal power handling is 500w but the mechanical limits will be reached well before 500w when installed in an IB. The AE IB's are closer to Fi's 15" IB subs. Scott mentions that they will only take 250w at 20hz to reach xmax. If you are a fan of action movies, you will get a lot of sub 20hz material and you should drop the power per driver and increase the number of drivers. That and opposing drivers is the reason you see IB's most of the time with two or four drivers (always an even number). Check out post #9 for a short review on Scott's IB drivers - link.

If the OP is not in the market for an IB, AE Speakers as well as Fi (and almost all of the subs sold here) will make excellent home theater sub in the right enclosure.

yeah i guess he did say home theatre...i just saw he said size was not an issue so a big IB enclosure would work for sure...

ill say go for the rlp 18 like m5 said then...it would be a killer

i am considering an ib15 just for my hi-fi set up...but i want to know a little more about it...ill start a new post and not get OT here

Low budget - MJ18 and BASH amp. Will also work in a relatively small box, like 4.5^3.

Bigger budget - RL-P18 and pro audio amp. Wants a VERY large box, but will have tremendous output.

I'm building a sono for a friend that will have an RL-P18 in around 16^3 @ 15.5Hz powered by an EP2500. Starting on it tonight and looking forward to hearing it when completed.

If you can handle $650 for sub and amp, the IXL-18 from Mach5 and Dayton 1000 watt from PE.

Just did a IXL-18 in 12 ft tuned to 18 Hz with the 1000 watt chassis version of the Dayton amp. Amazing for the money.

Otherwise, the MJ18 and the 500 watt Bash as already mentioned would be a nice low budget setup for under $350.

The IXL-18 is a great option as well. I have a 12 and it is a beast!!

If you need to stay on a lower budget, the MJ is a great choice. I had to tear up a damaged one last night. Very well built driver.
