Being polite as a gym member

Recommended Posts

Something that has always been a peeve with me is how others act and treat me while I am in the gym. I take it very seriously, do my best not to talk to or bother anyone.

I guess I only mention this because, New Year gym people suck.

  • They over flow the parking lot (can't seem to drive either)
  • think they can just join the gym and start working out on the machines and weights without doing any research or training
  • act as if the gym floor is social hour
  • forget that others are waiting for machines
  • make over the top gratutious noises
  • don't return weights to their proper locations
  • don't wipe down machines or benches after they are done
  • block machines while posing for the mirror when they are years away from being even ready to
  • stand to close to me while I am in the middle of a set
  • take over 15 minutes to get ready blocking me from returning to my locker
  • not wearing a towel after getting out of the shower

I could go on for a long time, but the gist of it is to help others have a good work out, be respectful and mindful of them because they paid to use the gym too. After March or so it dies down, then May comes around and people suddenly have to look good for the beach and the cycle continues until August, then clears out until the New Year.

my problem with gyms is they want 275.oo up front then they demand access to your bank account / then after working out for a whole 2 weeks they close the gym and transfer my membership too somewhere in BFE and keep drawing there monthly fee / i had to close my bank account to get them to stop...

this has happened twice to me...

here in NY we call them "the resolutions" I dread that first week after new years. 40000 cars and even more 500 pound women ruining all the good equipment. It takes about 2 months for them to get sick of it and head back to mcdonalds.

Well one of my quirks is that I used to PT, I want to lend a little hand when I see them using horrible form or trying to lift to much or something else not good. But I have to refrain because it is no longer my job and they will not listen to me anyway.

lol... I only got the membership to play B-ball, went in last night, after not going for a few weeks as I have a wieght room at my house...sooooo much nicer than lifting at the gym even if they have better equipment.

and they said my account had been canceled... they tried to contact me, never did...its a cell phone and i woulda known.... and now owe 4 months back pay to get back in....WTF?

all of denim's reasons, and these are why I lift at home... and do 5 mile runs... (well, in the summer) there is lift 2 feet of snow here now...

I think it's funny how everyone in there over does one exersise- thinking there going to get bigger working out one set of muscles for longer periods (like biceps). Then you have personal trainers that don't know what there doing trying to tell some old women/men how and what muscles they need to be working on?

Am I the only one who sees the parallels between this and people who are new to the forum?

Guess I've been on the internetz too long.

I love the gym I belong to at home. It is kinda small, but it's not a mainstream gym. Just a Mom 'n Pop gym, and older couple owns it. The people who lift there are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. There are bodybuilders down there and power lifters, so whatever you want you can find!

Also, I hate, HATE, the YMCA gym in my town. If you try to go in anytime after school until nine its always a bunch of 12-13 year old kids being idiots. Another thing I have against it is: If you do ANYTHING other than a curl, bench press, or squat everyone looks at you like your crazy.
