Doing an install for a friend, opinions on the Memphis 4000 watt mono

Recommended Posts

I'm building an enclosure for 4 12in Solo Barics, 2007 models. The question I have is he's already got the gear and he bought one of the really long, thin Memphis 4000 watt mono amplifiers. Does anyone have any experience with these? I personally think it's overpriced. I'm hoping it turns out to be a decent amp but I want to make sure the setup goes well for him.

I saw a few in competition this past year. I think one or two people on here have one. Memphis are good amps, not amazing or world beating, but that 4000 watt model seemed to fair well from what I have seen, but keep in mind I only got to see a few.

I've heard on at a local shop...if you are going to install this amp you NEED a BIG alternator and some more batteries...its a power hog

Guy around here from our local shop is running the Memphis M4KW 4000.1 Mono.

He's got a 220 amp alternator and like 4 optima yellow tops and it needs more. He's pushing 3 Memphis 12" MOJO 12's with it.

Nice amp, but I agree...Way overpriced amplifier...but it seems like a nice amp.

He already plans to update the alternator, I'll recommend he install at least 1 extra Optima battery and an isolator. I'm planning a 12 cubic foot enclosure with a single slot vent tuned around 35htz. I'm just hoping everything holds up for him. He picked out all of his equipment I'm just doing the box and the install. This will be the first time I've ever installed an amp over 1000 watts; hell when I first got into this 1000 watts was absolutly HUGE LOL.

you have to absolutely make sure the electrical is up to par. while not as big an issue on later 4kws, early ones would flame out (quite literally) from low voltages. it'll do rated power, or close enough to not matter, but does indeed need current to do so.

overpriced? i guess that's up to the individual. not too many 4kws that size, most are that long and alot wider. and some don't have the customer service memphis has (or had). as an previous employee at a shop that used to predominatly sell memphis, very few namebrands customer service is as good as memphis's. kicker bieng really close.

good luck with the install, and make sure you can keep voltage up.

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

I was running 4 of them about 2 months ago. I was letting the voltage drop below 11v on heavy drops and suddenly one went up. I don't know if it was because of the drops or just a defect, but either way I'm running 4 BTLs off 1 amp right now.

Heres a quick vid of it.

I sent the damaged amp out Dec. 6th for repair, and got it back January 21st. Quite a bit of time, but they say they fixed the problem so hopefully it'll work good when I get it hooked up.

I had a 200a alt and 3 yellowtops with 1 amp and it wasn't keeping 12v very steady. Right now I have 5 batteries on the one amp and it would do well with a 2nd alternator. I've been told countless times to give the amp 16v, but I really like them. The small footprint is definitely a plus.

a freind used to use 2 at 16volts competing. he was getting 46-4700 each @1ohm (and yes they are current whores)

went to 4 saz 1500d and got more power with less draw

got 5700 out of a strapped pair

the batts in the background of the pic is what was running the memphises also

http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/forum/i...?showtopic=7117

belive its 8 of the 8v and 2 powermasters 16v batts

and still lost a m4kw to low voltage

why use optima's as they are not deisnged for car audio only for those extra cranking amps, if you were to put in a second battery id go with kinetik
