Blown....

Recommended Posts

Well, apparently i blew my sub this evening and i am very frustrated =/ If someone with any idea of what i can do to fix the sub id gladly appreciate your comments. I posted a thread in another forum and heres the link to what happened. http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f27/uh-ohh-334243/

Does anyone happen to have the phone number to reach Fi headquarters so that i can talk in person? I believe Scott is the man to talk to

sounds to me like you blew it. e-mail scott about a recone.

if you have a dmm check the resistance across the coils and report back

you probrably clipped it. i'm pretty sure you were not getting a 750 out of that amp and tried to get as much out of it not knowing what the amps really do.

really? i always read that hifonics was a pretty reputable brand and were pretty honest about their ratings. Is there any tips on how i can prevent this from happening again?

Im going to email scott tomorrow and see what i can do. Id like to order a Q to replace the SSD, but im so happy with the company i wouldn't mind having it "reconed".

How much can these subs actually handle-( talking about RMS )? Much more than what their rated at?

stick to rms, anything more than that is asking for trouble. There's no real benifit to throwing 400W more except a much better chance of burning the bish up.

what sucks is that, hifonics was the only Amp that i could find that was in ballpark figures of the specs that it required and it wasnt to hard on the wallet. What other kinds of amps should i consider for my new sub? If i had the money, id look into kicker or JL but theres no way i can manage to get one of those right now

are you looking for an amp for the SSD or will you be upgrading subs?

most likely a 12inch Q series sub

Depending on the budget you could look at a sundown sae-1000D or a refurbished kicker on ebay.

Careful setting of the gains :D

I would say check the resistance as well

I had a problem wt my 1st set up subs, they started playin like scratchy bass notes, the resistance was correct it was like the coil was misallighned or something...but i was like well what the hell its already blown so i thought , played the scratchy noise at loud volume and it went away and started working, lol

I think i was just lucky...check resistance...call fi or email scott

as everyone else said you were def clipping, as for the 12''q its a good speaker i run 2, your gonna wanna get a better amp, if your gonna run 1 amp look int the alpine pdx series nice and small and 93% efficient

sorry to bring this topic up again, but i inverted the sub and now its down firing into the box. I was trying to see from the outside on what the sub was actually doing. Only half of the sub works and the other half just vibrates a little. Nothing was burnt or broken. So gay and my dad keeps busting my balls saying that these are chit quality subs because they couldn't even handle half the RMS than what it was rated

These are actually really good subs and can handle and excess of 1000rms with a flat coil and bp power.... YOU blew it... And what you heard about hifonics was wrong.... They aren't horrible but they aren't the best and they do over-rate their stuff a little... Set the gains properly, find a topic on how to do that...

if you want to run hifonics you should run a sub that's the same quality, fi doesn't offer any of those. That's just my opinion though.

If your dad is giving you chit then tell him to grow up. explain that he should have given you enough money to get a sundown 3000d and BTL or two. The failure of the sub was your fault, not the subs, and honestly not the amps. if you wouldn't have clipped it the sub would have lasted forever. Get the power up to about 1000W and set your gains properly and you'll not have any more problems. With your hifonics you weren't giving it enough power for your taste so you turned it up above what the amp could do, it clipped and killed the sub.

The Q can take way more power than you've given it, but it can't take a dirty signal. I have personally thrown 2x the power at mine and it handled it just fine.
