toggle switch on remote wire for amps

Recommended Posts

this is what i want to do. if someone could draw up a nice detailed wiring diagram to help me better understand it, id really appreciate it :D

ok first off, please dont hate, you guys know how i do with the mids/highs, im just looking for someone to help, if you dont want to help me, please dont post and get my thread locked or start arguments.

ok, so, in the mini cooper, ill have a total of 3 amps. they're on order so theyll be here soon :)

i have the 18" mt, 16 6.5s in the front cabin, and 16 tweets in the front cabin.

in the back (behind the wall in the cargo area) i will have 2 sets of components (or 4 coax, whatever i decide on) for shows or whatever.

the front 16 mids will be powered by a single 2 channel amp.

the front 16 tweets will be powered by a single 4 channelamp, BUT the tweets will only use 2 of those channels. that leaves me with channel 3 and 4 left for the mids in the cargo area.

now, what i want is:

-a toggle switch on the sub amp's remote wire, to turn it off when im only using the mids out back

-a toggle switch on the front mids 2 channel amp so i can turn that off when im only using the mids out back

now, for the final 4 channel amp, this is what i need:

i need 2 toggle switches. one for the first 2 channels (the front tweets)

and one for the second 2 channels (the 4 mids out back)

that way i can turn off channel 1 and 2 (front tweets) and leave channel 3 and 4 on (mids out back)

if i put a switch on the remote wire, it will turn off all 4 channels, thats not what i need.

sorry for all the bold's lol, just trying to make it as least confusing as possible.

theres alot of 16's in that statment.

as a kid, i used to hook speakers up in all my rooms, bathroom kitchen living room bed room closets, i was strange. i used both toggles and dimmer switchs to cut off the speakers in teh rooms i was not in...... now im not sure if that was bad for the speakers ... i know it was bad for the amp simply because my ohms were all falked up,.

i allways put a toggle on the + side of the speaker wire, and with the flick of a wrist it was on or off,.

and the same thing on the dimmer switch, just one from lowes, for the lights in your house,

i never mesured to see if the ohm load was still present to the amp,

i know this question is more for everyone else, but it reminded me of my youth

why toggle switches?youre overcomplicatting things. get a nice eq/crossover with fade and sub control and you can play with levels however you like. i used toggle switches when i was in high school to cut out my bass amps till one day the connection came loose and damn near burned my car to the ground! hope this helps.

You can't do what you want to do with toggle switches on the remote wire.

They'd have to be on the RCA's to kill signal to the amp. Or just get an EQ like Benz suggested.

i would of thought if he used a relay and upped his remote voltage to a 12v he could split the output tab into how ever many amounts and place a toggle switch in line of the remote wire leading to that amp allowing him to turn on/off the desired amp of his choice. though for the last desire of turning off the tweets or mids and such seperatly from a 4 channel amp is what i feel could not be done unless if you chit the amp down entirely. he could just get 2 more 2 channel amps and sell the 4 channel then be able to independantly toggle all amps.

toggling on or off an entire amp obviously is easy, toggle switch on remote wire.

You do not a wiring diagram for these unless it's light controlled.

Non light controlled - 2 prongs, wire in, wire out, simple.

Lighted switch - 3 prongs, wire in, wire out, ground out. When the wire runs back out, it is also carrying the current to power the light. If you want lighted switched, look into LEDs to save on gauge size.

Switching off specific channels on 4 channel amp-

1st off, contact the manufacturer of the amp and ask them if the amp will or could have any problems if you were to kill output on a set of channels, either 1-2 or 3-4 during playback via speaker wire and then ask via rca jacks.

These are different, speaker wire is outputting live current and voltage, lots of amps have "short circuit protection" which might be what it would need if you toggled a switch onto the actual speaker wire. Although, repeated attempts overtime should eventually damage the protection circuitry but that's an assumption.

Toggling via rca- this should be safe but ask your manufacturer for sure. The only way i would know how to do this via a toggle switch is pretty expensive via rca jack for just a turn\off feature.

That would be to buy a line driver and run it to ONLY 2 of the 4 channels of this 4 channel amp. Make sure that the line driver's settings is set to disable\off\kill whatever their terminology is. You want the signal that passes through your stereo to go right through the line driver WITHOUT the lone driver interfering with the signal itself. You might have to adjust the gain on the line driver though so i hope you have an o-scope handy. the remote wire on the line driver would then have the toggle switch hooked to it so when disabled, signals passed through the driver would stop because....it's shut off.

You should be able to find cheap line drivers for under $60-70.
