In need of a box design

Recommended Posts

Well i received my 12 inch q in the mail about 3 weeks ago, was packaged with much care and got here in a timely manner considering the holidays, thanks fi. The sub is in a 2.7@32hz box, sub and port back. The Q is being pushed by a US Amps XT4000d(1500rms@1 ohm), so it's getting all the power it needs. The Q gets fairly loud and sounds great with different types of music, but I'm just not getting the lows that i was expecting after reading all the reviews on it. Songs like soul survivor and the low note in hypnotize just aren't being played with authority. I know that there is supposed to be a break-in time with this sub, but the suspension has loosened up since the first day it saw power. The only thing I can think of is that the enclosure just doesn't suit this driver well. I want to try a crx style box since it's in an Acura RSX, which is a hatch. I also want to make the box a little smaller, maybe 2.2 net @ 30-32 hz. Can someone one here help me design it?

If you want low frequency, why not sealed?

Because I'm greedy and want as much output as I can get to go with those lower frequencies. I'm also anxious to hear a crx style enclosure in my car.

2.7@32hz should be really smooth and mean down in the lows. maybe bump the cubes up but 3 to 3.25 is big on a 12" Q and might be peaky. looking at the situation and the type of vehicle i think you are right in trying the CRX style box, i dont think the issue is tuning but the way the box works with the car.

In all honesty the box you have now is on the large side of things, but should be better on the lows than a smaller 2.2 cuft. What way is the sub and port oriented? What is your subsonic set to? While 1500W is 50% more than the Q is rated for, you are alos in a larger than normall recommended enclosure too... Im wondering where your subsonic filter is set? While I am always telling people to set them high and back down until it is balanced to be safe, Im wondering if yours is still on the high side of things.

After a solid break in things change output wise down low, but still....

Thanks,

Scott

Both the sub and port are facing the rear of the car. I thought the ssf was the problem at first too but now it's set to 20hz which is low enough.

Are you using a slot port or a round port(aero port, pvc)? If I were you I'd..Now it's hard to say I'm sitting here playing with some box designs and I wouldn't make the enclosure any smaller...but that's your call. If you want to drop with size put it in 2.2 total internal....with a slot port, boundary loaded @20in^2, 19in deep with a box that small the port is probably going to have a bend in it. I would also flare the back of the port atleast 3 in, that will decrease the velocity of your port....amongst other things. That will leave you with 1.9ft^3 raw and a tuning of 35hz. Good Luck!!

Actually setting the SSF to 20 Hz is too low and will allow for mechanical damage if played below tuning.

Have things changed in the past week with more time on the sub? The BP option adds an extra spider so it does take a little longer to break in and settle to spec.

Sub and port back usually works well, or subs up port back. Have you tried orienting the box indifferent directions to see how things change? How close is the sub and port to the back of the trunk?

Thanks,

Scott
