SEA W18EX 7"

Running them off a 100.4 and Pioneer 9800. Filter on the headunit is at a 6 db slope. Gain set around 75 rms, LPF is 2500hrz and subsonic at 200hrz. How do these setting sound? and also vocals can be heard through a speaker like this? Just curious

I wouldn't use the Excel above 1200hz and it in particular needs a much higher slope especially if you run it higher in frequency, the breakup on that cone is brutal. You should have no subsonic at all, that is only for ported enclosures (generically). The Excel should be capable of playing down to dang near 40hz in a good install.

Without a notch you may need to go even higher, only your ears can tell for your install though. That isn't a driver I'd recommend to someone first time out, if you don't have it yet I would highly suggest something easier to integrate.

m5 how much power do you send your SEAs? I'm guessing you have them in your car because they are in your signature

Using an amp rated for 55w@4ohms now, but used to have 160w@4.

edit: actually they are coming out of the car pronto as well.

No worries. Love the drivers, but feel they belong in my house more than in my car....plus the car is going to get sold.

In a big sealed box... which is hard to do in a car. That is why most people installed them in an IB configuration.

I actually sort of like them ported, but either way the box needs to be too large for a car.

What is an IB config? They don't have that "boomy" type of sound. The problem is that i needed to use a spacer so they aren't flush with the door, but spaced out about a quarter of an inch.

IB = in the door in most cases. How well deadened are your doors? Make your spacer out of wood... then call it a baffle.

They are jeep doors - they have a moisture barrier and i also added second skin Overkill. They get very sloppy quickly. Power is very low - 40 RMS. I also have the level of the speakers from the headunit down to -12. Very confused

Perhaps reviewing all of your settings would be helpful, your description doesn't sound like the W18E's.

Made baffles for the speakers. They sound alot better but im still having problems with the right speaker. It still has "breakup" as M5 described. LPF is set to 1200 with 12 db slope and 45 rms. The level on my headunit is down -2db. The right speaker doesnt make the noise. I keep thinking that the speaker is hitting the grill but i dont hear it on my side and they are both the same.

Perhaps it isn't breakup but a physical issue. Can you describe the sound?

Its hard to describe but its driving me crazy. For awhile i feel it was the speaker hitting the front grill of the door panels so i did some work so it had more room for excursion but it still makes the sound. It sounds like a rattling of the speaker coming from the woofer. The left speaker doesn't make the sound. When you said you ran them on 55 watts you mean 55 watts and not 55 rms right. I get confused bc sometimes people dont say it and not sure if they mean either or.

I always mean rms. I've had 160 on them as well. Did you torque it down evenly? Is the driver rattling in its installation? What size baffle is it mounted to? Any isolation clay?

What is the excursion on these speakers? They are tightened down evenly and the installation is solid. I used 1/2 MDF wood that acted as a saver and a baffle to fight it in my 6 by 9 doors. The only thing that makes sense is that they still hit the factory grill, but at the same time the left door is completely fine and it isnt even sunken into the door as much.

I'd pull off the skins and listen to them without, it should make the problem rather obvious. By tightening down evenly I should have been more clear (maybe what you did anyways) but I meant to tighten the screws in an opposite rotating star pattern a little at a time, like torquing down rims on a car.

How would I achieve a higher slope for these mids? They still have breakup at 35rms. I can only go -12 db with my pioneer 9800. Is there another external device I can get? Also why would the right speaker have more breakup then the left? It sounds like a zapping sound n its driving me crazyyy bc I can't listen to them the way I want
