Recommended Posts

Now that i'm going to have big power available in the home setup i thought about upgrading to an 18. And i found an 05 xxx :)

Any thoughts on using it for the home setup ? There also is a chance i could go IB.

Probably going for a big sealed box at first...

How about big ported! 5cubes plus, 20Hz or lower.

More home theater or home stereo? (either way I'd say the same, but everyone seems to think sub 30-35Hz for music is a waste...BAH!)

well to make them happy, go 4 cubes around 27-33Hz....still a bit large and low for music, but it's in home and may do some THX.1 duty?

(ignore that...6 cubes 14-20Hz!!!)

iirc home theater boxes need to be huge like in the 12-16cuft range for that 18", and tuned low to like at 20hz.

Seal it... it has like a 30 Hz F3 sealed IIRC. I was going to do a sealed XXX 18 in my home but I sold em' all.

for years I hated ported, but after learning and learning, i finally realized it was because most people tune higher...much higher (and have much less airspace) than my personal tastes.

I can no longer justify using 50% of the cone's movement, trapping the other 1/2 in a sealed chamber. Port it. Transmission line. TPQW. Anything hexiBase would make. But don't waste the back 1/2 of the driver!

the last one I did was a couple years ago and I did it in 10 cubes with 100" of port tuned to 20 hz. If I remember right, the port was a pain in the arse, b/c of how long it had to be, but man it was sick for movies. Had a crown CE1000 (i think that was the model number) on it.

Sounds like a plan :)

I just hope the seller won't try anything funny.

Sealed 5 cubes or ported 7.5 cubes tuned to 28 Hz (for music) or 10 cubes 18 Hz (for home theater).

Hmmm thats a hard one, I havent ever had the opportunity to play with an RL-P, but the XXX does have more movement, 27mm vs 33mm of x-max.

Id rather have a RL-p for HT than a XXX.

The specs are more forgiving IMO
