Just Ordered SSD 12 Copper Coil

Recommended Posts

to the guys at Fi- if it makes any difference i will be using this 12 sealed off of a US Amps AX600DE and per Flakko will push 800-850 at 13.6v. just wanted to give you a heads up if it makes a difference in the build if you set them up any differently.

I got the same speaker as you and I love it. Be it that i'm underpowering it right now but not listening it too loud, all I can say is it still vibrates the car. With that power you should be doing pretty good.

just curious are you ported or sealed? when i was younger and did not care about space i built alot of sealed systems with multiple drivers. now that i am older and need the space- the last few boxes i have built have been single driver ported. with the proper tuning i have been pretty happy with the output as well as sound quality. just wonder how good this thing will sound sealed. hard to really say until it's in for sure.

Sealed tube I custom made with pvc. 12" diameter 2 feet long. 1.32ft interior volume before sub placement. All I can say is it goes pretty deep and pretty loud. More power is needed for my sealed setup but because i'm on budget constraints, it'll fill the bill. I know that if I go ported with a 1.6 or bigger box, this'll rock even with the power i'm running it with.

You made an enclosure out of pvc pipe? Im pretty sure pvc pipe isn't the best thing to use and you could probbly gain a lot by making an MDF enclosure... Does the pipe not roll around?

my last 3 vehicles were just crap for any type of mounting depth for subs, so i have had to resort to 8s the last five years. the best box i built was a fibreglass custom center console for my 04 F150- i had 4 RE8s ported at 32hz. i have always preferred larger drivers, but the last 12 i had was a 12w6 and was thoroughly not impressed with 2 of them sealed ( this was in 98 though and the subs have gotten so much better since then ). i have better amps this time around and am hoping that i will have solid output from a single sealed 12. otherwise i have the perfect box already built for 2 AA 8s tuned to 28hz cuz building a ported box for this guy will be fun, but i wont get to use it much due to it taking up so much room.

Yup, I know. I was so anxious to hear how it sounded that I just threw it in. I made it 16 years ago in high school. The walls are a little less than a half inch thick with 1/2"pboard back. It rolls like a mf so I got it bungeed to the back of my trunk. Works for now until I build a spec box per FI... ported though.

Rugdnit... How much space you looking to take up? A 1.3 like mine takes up just a small amount of space for a 12" and if I had the power it would definitely bump. I wasn't impressed with the sub initially but after break in, it is much more powerful. For an entry level 12" I can definitely say its better than the type R's, Atomics, and other pitiful speakers I had. Try borrowing a friend's ported box and compare it to yours when you build it. I kinda want to keep my trunk space but the Fi's scream for ports.

i am doing 1.2 sealed and will build a ported box as well. no big deal.... i have built so many boxes that i enjoy it. it will be cool to have 2.

update- i got the sub a little late since UPS decided to send it to Sacramento after it got to Reno, so it took a few extra days to make its way back into Nevada. i built a box to fit along the rear driver side wheel well using mostly 3/4 mdf and a little fiberglass work to mold to the curve of the wheel well. i reinforced the faceplate with fiberglass. the box sticks out a good 13" since the sub fires directly back. its a little bigger than i would like, but this will be a great fit since all my sample bags will fit just fine in the car and wont interfere like it would with a side firing sub. the SSD 12 CC really pounds for a sealed box. it is pretty accurate and the SQ is pretty solid. playing rock music it pounds just fine wired off of one VC, but get into the Rap/A$$ Shakin stuff and the AX600DE shuts down. after wiring the Dual 1 ohm VC in SERIES i went back through my library on the Z1. i did not really notice a loss in volume and the SSD just hammers out the lows. even while idling the AX600DE just DRIVES this sub. i get no loss of power and no dimming- something i expected with the storm coming through the area and using all the accessories like the heated seats, window defrosters, and heater blasting. this is just an early update. i will be on the road all week starting Monday, so i will get some good listening time in. very happy with how efficient the amp is and how good this SSD sounds. i will build a ported box once the weather warms up in a few months. someone mention somewhere that the SSD 12 just begs to be ported and while i feel he may be right-- i am enjoying the SQ setup. just wanted to thank all who chimed in and Nick who stuck by his recommendation even after i second guessed him.
