Going active, need an experienced hand with a few things.

Recommended Posts

Okay, from what ive read over the past few weeks ive decided that i want to go with an active frontstage. My DEH-7800MP is capable of this from what ive read. I plan on glassing the front doors to accept a well acoustically matched woofer and tweeter combo, i was hoping someone here could give me some suggestions on what woofer and tweeter to use so that i have little flatspots in my sound. Also for reference i hate harsh pingy tweeters, i don't particularly like all my highs to sound like crashing symbols! lol....

With switching to an active front stage this also means i will be completely losing my rear audio am i correct? Thats the only thing ive been confused about!

Thanks in advance,

Chris McDonald

We can help with the drivers, but really need to know your mounting locations, crossover points that are available, budget, installation skills, listening preferences and so on.

Yep, you are going to lose your rears, but really you should consider that a good thing. :)

stock mounting locations are the tweeter at the top of the door panel pointing towards the center of the car at head height, woofers are at the bottom front of the doors directed toward the lower middle of the front compartment. Installation skills, well pops is a carpenter so he builds me whatever enclosure i want and i help but i can fiberglass fairly well due to working in the body shop a bit before i became a mechanic. Im not sure of the crossover points available as i cannot get my account on pioneer to work to get a manual for my 7800MP, would anyone else happen to know its crossover points?

I didn't know it was able to do active??

I thought Pioneer only offered the 880prs & P9 combo with active crossover capabilities.

i could be wrong on its active capabilities but under audio features it shares everything with the 880 accept the burr brown decoders... 3 way crossover network is shown under features... if its incapable what would i need to make it a active setup?

I think that one actually might be, the 9800's were and perhaps the 7800 but until now I hadn't seen anyone using it that way.

Regrettably you cannot tell from Pio's spec page as they call even a dumb highpass a crossover network. Grab the Low-pass circuit from the manual and type the available crossover points you have and that will help. Also does the mid bandpass on that h/u?

50—63—80—100—125—160—200 (Hz).... Damn it this sucks. Says 3 way crossover on the features list so i sorta get screwed...

Is there any way i can keep this deck and go active? Such as an external crossover? i just want to get some amazing sound quality in this car for when im not street beating.

On another note, the settings in the manual and points are identical to those of the 9800.... And i do have time alignment on my deck as well as it. So if its possible with the 9800 it must be able to as well somehow... blech i wish i knew more about headunits.

The 9800 has a "network mode" that allows other settings. IIRC anyway.
