Cold Cap, stinky coil

Recommended Posts

Heres the dilemma, i was just driving home from my friends when i noticed a burning electrical smell from the rear of my car. When i got home i opened the trunk and proceeded to check my dustcap to see if it was hot but it was ice cold and the stink was coming from my port. The sub was playing undistorted still and is fairly new. Should i worry about this? Sub feels fine and my gains were set by ear. No noticable clipping. Any comments, advice, or otherwise would be wonderful... Thanks!

Sub: RE SX 15 - 4 cuft box tuned to 34

Amp: MA HC2001

Source: Pioneer DEH-7800

Clipping is pretty hard to hear if you don't know what to listen for. At the very least you should set your gains with a DMM.

Heres the problem, i dont know if my amp "does rated" power.... Its rated at 1000RMS at 1ohm. Only fused with 2-30 amp fuses... To me that says that this amp should only be capable of 700 RMS at 12.5 due to efficiency as well. So if i were to set it with a DMM it could be dangerous. Anyone know where i can get a good deal on an O-scope?

I'm in the same boat Chris.

I've got a 15" RE SX an whenever I hit hard notes I get a burning smell coming from the ports. Like an electrical burning smell, it fudgeen stinks. I can't figure out and I have the amp at 1/4 gain wit 0 bass boost. :puzzled:

turn the gains down even more. you may have a decently high preout voltage
