Cone area VS Power

Recommended Posts

So I am helping a friend install a new system into his car. Right now we are looking at running either a single 12 pushing 2k watts to it or running 2 10's, each with 1k watts. Question.....a very loud SPL oriented daily driver is the goal, would the 2 10's be better do to sheer cone area or would the 12 be better???? I am thinking the 2 10's but I want to double check to be on the safe side before I tell him wrong.

2 10" BL's or 1 12" BTL

That's entirely dependant upon too many things.

What type of box? Ported? What frequency is the port? What is the resonant frequency of the car?

I could go on for days about this.

Pick one or the other, it'll be a 50/50 chance either way.

wow, i never realized so many factors could affect these things. I love it when other noobs ask questions so i can also get a better understanding. I am also in the same boat and guess i will have to just try one of the two things i was lookin at.

The difference between a 12" and two 10's is 113 vs. 157 = 44 square inches, where 50.25 square inches is an 8" speaker, it's nearly unnoticable. I'd rather buy a 12" BTL on 2300-2500W rather than 2 10's with 1000W each. The BTL has better efficiency, it should do more with it's power and might equal out, so go the cheaper route. Eventually you'll just want another 12" BTL and after dropping on a 12" and another 2000W you'll be wondering if the 5dB was worth $1000. A 15" has 176 square inches, it would be cheaper/louder to get a 15" BTL and stick it in 3.5 cubes (the 10's would probably be 3 cubes so half a cube isn't much).

really, 5dBs? Thats pretty naive to think that. OP, Have a good port area. That will help a lot with getting louder. With the same power and other same constants, the higher cone area setup will be louder. Really, getting louder with whatever will depend on testing. That is the biggest part of getting loud.

if both subs are in the same line, then 2 10s by far.

I would even opt to build the enclosure slightly larger for the 2 10s for even better efficiency.

Use about 60-100sqin of port and you will like it.

Hi,

If you want to listen to music everyday, and not only test tones to compete, you can also try a 15" BL in a big ported box.

There are also lots of other subs that can do the job.

I've never heared a Bl or a Btl, but I would chose the Bl.

Just my 2 cts.
