$300 For Pair Of Mids And Tweeters

Recommended Posts

Well i just sold off my XXX that i no longer need and after paying off some of the stuff for my bass race van i have about 300 dollars to put in a new front stage in silverado. Currently im running Kicker SS65.2's active off a 880PR and Sundown SAX-100.4. The kicker were just something temp i got from a buddy until i got time to glass my doors up. Well the time has come and im looking to get started right after christmas or new years. I have a 880PR for processing and a Sundown SAX-100.4 for power. So im looking for recommendations on a mid and tweeter for a 2-way. Im going to glass the doors so i dont realy have a restriction or set driver size.

Amp power

100rms @ 4 x4

160rms @ 2 x4

320rms @ 4 x2

So if you have a tweeter and mid in mind that fits my budget and needs please post them up. Links are always a plus....

Thanks

Corey

God what would you like about them. *pukes

The tweeters rip your head off and there is absolutely 0 midbass. Personally I actually like Kicker products but those components are a complete joke.

As for your recommendations:

I love the tweeter Scott recommended, but if you like the presence of a metal tweeter there are other ones that you will prefer. Here is a list of ones I would look at that will completely embarass your current setup and fit in your budget.

Seas L18, CA18, W18NX

Scan Speak 7" Revelator

Dayton RS180

Peerless 7" Exclusive

Usher 8945P

Peerless HDS Tweeter

Seas 27t___ -- metal or textile versions

Dayton RS28

Usher 9950

Morel MDT 30

LPG 25nfa

Vifa XT19

Being you have a truck I only picked drivers that will work pretty well off axis in the stock locations. Depending on your listening preferences it will be pretty easy to narrow the list down.

Thanks ///M5,

I was hoping you would drop by :)

Thanks for all the recommendations, i always wanted to try the Peerless Exclusive because i have had nothing but great success w/ peerless. As for the SS65.2 i have to aggree, the mid is very lacking. Also im deffintly a soft dome fan, never realy cared for a metal tweeter. I might have a hard time finiding the XT19 so i might have to cross that off the list because there sold out every were. IIRC they also sold them under the alpine name w/ the same part number. Correct me if im wrong but its the one used in the x series set.

Thanks

Cool, guess i over looked it and didnt see them avaiable on PE or MS. Sorry bout that. As for the mid, im looking for something that will still produce some nice midbass and play high enough to mate with any of the tweeters listed above. Also looking for something that will do well off axis but you have already took care of that. After looking thro all the produces you have listed i have narrowed it down to the following mids and tweeters

Mids

Seas L18

Seas CA18

Peerless Exclusive

Usher 8945P

Tweeter

Peerless HDS

Seas 27TF

Usher 9950

LPG 25nfa

Vifa XT19

Thanks again

The mid will be in a sealed door pod also, i forgot to mention that. The chamber size will be determined by the driver of coarse, so i forgot to mention the mid must perform fairly well sealed. ///M5 i was wounder out of the remaining choices and application which tweeter and mid you recommend?

Thanks

Where is the location you are mounting them and is there a reason you are sealing them instead of just doing them IB:?

There gonna be mounted in door pods similar to the stock location. There not realy in the same location as your due to the fact your silverado has power windows. The only reason i was considering sealed over IB was less deading and sealing of the doors and i planned on glassing the door pannels any how. If you think IB is the way to go then so be it that is what will be done.

Thats np then they can be mounted in the stock location and the tweeter will probally be glassed in the pillar or snail pannels then. So out of remain drives listed would you say there is a pair that will work "best" for what im looking to do? Im highly considering doing the exclusive with the hds or lpg.

You will give up midbass with the Exclusive compared to the others, but the midrange detail is superb. There is no best out of the group, they are all nice but there will be one that you like better. Understanding your goals would help ;)

And yes, doing pods would be a mistake. If it were a 3 way and you were just podding the midrange fine, but in a 2way it is damn impossible to get right and will require you to build the pod many, many times before it sounds good.

Scott, if you don't mind me asking, how are the L18RNX? I shy away from anything of metal cone smaller then 8" in size. I guess my ear prefers to give up some ultra precision for smooth sound. I miss my QSD's in the 300ce, they were very sharp and crisp, but that is the last metal's I have messed with.

The L18's are sweet, but the breakup mode is a pain in the ass to deal with. Try more than 10dB of gain in the 6.5k+ regions along with valleys as well. They are not trivial to use passively nor actively but have great midbass and significantly more detail than the CA in the midrange region. In hard cone Seas drivers though, I really prefer the Excel though but it is at a completely different budget point.
