What am i doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

OK here goes

I built a box for one of my subs since one was damaged in shipping and i am waiting for a replacement, Memphis 12'' M3 dvc 4 ohm.

It is ported and is 2.0 cubes after port and sub displacement. The port is 2.5 inches wide and 12.5 inches high and 27.75 inches long.

can anyone tell my why this does not have hardly any output?

I am running a Memphis PR 1.1000 amp it is seeing 2 ohms which according to the owners manual is 600 watts RMS@ 2 ohms. I have already checked the all of the electrical connections, The sub is wired fine no out of phase coil or anything. Now if i put my old subs back in they sound awesome, wtf did i do wrong?

what are the old subs

also you cant go by the box.. the rms is prolly 600@ 2 ohms with like 16.6 volts.. or at the least 14.

4.. and the Memphis web site states to make upgreads to your charging system to run that amp,

ur prolly putting out maybe 500 watts clippin all the way

i never liked Memphis

Perhaps the terminals on your new sub have one labelled incorrectly so they are out of phase.

i am pretty sure that isnt the case here, i cant see paying $225 for each sub to have one that is wired wrong. But i will keep that as a possiblty

Ha, that is funny. I have seen that on a lot of drivers.

can you describe how this horrible sound is? like loads of distortion or slapping or scratching or something?

can you get us pics of how it's wired?

did you re adjust your amp setting to accomodate the sub? you can't use the same settings on a new sub from an old subs.

im pretty familiar with how this stuff works this is not the first or the last time i have/will set up a stereo, but i am having trouble now.

if i pop the coils with a 9v battery the cone moves the same direction. so they are fine. Can anyone check to see that my enclosure is built correctly?

It is 30'' long, 14.5'' high, 14'' deep, the port is 2.5'' wide, 12.5'' high, 27.75'' long it is built like the plan shown below

Well without really any clue as to what it's doing because 1) we're not standing there looking at it and 2) you really havne't described the problem more than "hardly any output" it's difficult for us to give you an informed suggestion as to what the cause might be.

it is supposed to be 2.00 cu.ft. @36 Hz, is that what it is?

Every setup I've seen with M3's in it. They love huge boxes. The one with the best output I've seen was a blazer with 2 M3's in a box probably 7-8 cubes, so around 4 cubes per. Tuned to 29. That's just my experiences though.

I can't tell how it's built but the number check out for what you're expecting. 2 cf after displacements. Tuning around 36 Hz. I'm thinking that's on the high side for tuning and low side for box volume but I don't have the parameters of that sub.

while the pr series of amps aren't the greatest, they will give the power they are rated for. IIRC, they are rated @14.4. it's not a bad budget 1000wrms amp.

have you put a dmm on the coils, made sure they are what they are supposed to be? is the box leaking? there are so many things that could be wrong, but without a bit more detail, it's going to be hard to completely answer the question. also, are you comparing the output of two subs vs the one?

The coils read 2.2 ohms DC resistance,i swapped amps yesterday an tried that but it still still sounds sloppy and is not very loud,(Clarion DPX11500) If i set the bass settings to the max and run the LOUD i can get some bass. I know the box is airtight, all of my cuts are dead on straight and square, plenty of glue i smoothed it into a nice bead along all the joints as i assembled it.

I know i have plenty of power but i think that my box isnt whta it was supposed to be. I am thinking i made a mistake with the port tuning and it is too low

EDIT thats 2.2 ohms with coils in parallel

I'm assuming it's supposed to be 2 4 ohm coils? If so, that seems a good bit high. 1.6 would be more normal. Figure after impedance rise the amp is seeing well over 4 ohms. Check to make sure that you have good connections that aren't wasting power to the sub.

well that is with my old dmm, i dont have my Snap On Vantage here at home today. The leads may be shot on the old dmm.

i guess i will just get a different set of subs. I thought memphis equipment was supposed to be good. I think i would have had better luck with some Wal Mart pioneer 12's. I am really starting to lose interest in this hobby as i am constantly getting in the ass when i buy this stuff.

I have asked many questions done many searches, This is the third attempt at trying a single sub setup. I guess i just need to scrap this idea now that i have my other sub here.

Is there a good reccomendation on where to start with two of the M3's? Volume suggestions? Tuning Frequency suggestions?

I want it to be loud but sound good. The clarion amp says it puts out 1500 watts Rms @1 and 2 ohms, it is strappable and i can go get another one if i need to.I would rather use the one as my alt is only capable of 225 amps, and i dont want to add a 3rd or 4th battery.

m3s aren't bad subs, i've done plenty of loud installs with them. but again, IMO, memphis quality has taken a downturn the last couple of years. and the box is about right for them. like helo mentioned, the coils seem a bit off, and with box rise, that could be causing the issue you're having.

don't strap those clarions on the m3s. while i doubt they put out a true 1500wrms, they still put out plenty more then each m3 will want. but i would definitely run one on the pair of m3s.

for the pair, i'd try a 4.5net@34hz box, between 35-40in^2 of port.

ok i checked the coils on both subs with my Vantage I got 1.7 and 1.6 ohms on each sub, i tried my leads from my old dmm and it said 2.2 ohms so those leads are in the trash can now ill get new ones from snapon man this week.

I have a box i built that is 4.5 @30Hz for the pair (i think). 60^2in of port 33.5 inches long. does that sound right?

i hope i have a lot of time in it and it looks very good.
