A little more info on the new Mags

Recommended Posts

Some of this was already posted on audiojunkies.com, but I'm posting it here because this is SI's forum and those who don't visit audiojunkies need to know about our news. All of our reps know this info, and they have kept their mouths shut because I asked them to. But now they can divulge anything they want (within reason).

Ok, well I guess I should get the biggest thing out of the way and say that the new Mag is going to be 5.5" deep.

I'm putting the motor inside a completely new basket on the new Mag's to reduce mounting depth to 5.5". I'm also using XBL^2 to get a super-flat BL curve and maintain our T/S's over the entire band of usable Xmax, which will make the driver sound better than before. I'm also copper plating the pole piece and then diamond CNC machining down the pole to reduce inductance while not loosing any BL (a sleeve over the pole has an air gap which reduces BL). A copper-coated pole piece reduces inductance even further (when I say 'even further' I mean that the inductance was lowered a LOT just because of XBL^2). The new inductance is roughly 1/3 of the current Mag (which means bandwidth goes up a TON and the driver will sound a LOT more natural).

Power handling will be 1000 watts in our specified enclosures. Sealed enclosure volume will be 0.8 cubes to 1.0 cubes. Ported enclosure alignments will be in the 1.5 cube area.

And the new BM's are going to be 3.5" deep for a 12" model. :) Once again, putting the motor inside the basket.

I love the small box, small mounting depth though. :fing34:

It does sound really cool, I am definitely considering replacing my 2 12" BMs with 2 of the new Mags, not sure sealed or ported though, but either way the enclosure will be smaller, which will be very nice.

Now this is what I am talking about. For someone like me not interested in SPL, these are the features that concern me. Keeping down inductance, less mounting depth, overall smaller enclosure, but still sound good. I don't know about the rest of your customer base, but it is definitely in tune with what I look for :)

Well that's good to hear! :) Instead of 140 dB weighing 120 lbs, wouldn't it be nice to be able to do 140 dB weighing 65 lbs? Not to mention being able to keep your trunk/hatch area.

And then there's the BM's. Those shallow suckers are going to be able to be mounted anywhere - up under your rear deck so you have ALL of your trunk room, behind the seat of a regular cab pickup with the seat all the way back, tucked away behind furniture for HT, etc.

Wow. New era for the Mag. Should be very interesting, to say the least.

Any ideas when the proto pics will be out? I'm guessing since it is XBL2 it'll be built by Adire, FI, or RE or are you using another build house that is able to make them. and Nick your a jerk most people want to see this driver more then thier kids and you guys keep teasing us lol... :)

Neither the Mag's nor the BM's are being built by any of those companies listed. The most important thing to remember about build houses is this: don't worry about it. :)

I've got a drawing and a picture of the basket I'm going to use. I could post that up, but it doesn't do the finished driver any justice.

Well Adire has gone under, RE only builds for RE now, and we're not using Fi. There are other build houses who can build a driver using XBL^2, but you are right; it's not common place.

I'll post the drawing of the basket this week for you. And after the drawing is posted I'll post the picture of it. Same with the new BM - draing first, pic second.

Great news...

Is that 1000 watt rating conservative or will be all she needs to get moving?

Is this woofer still LSQ?

1000 watts is an excess of what it needs to reach full excursion. The new Mag is going to be more efficient than the current Mag. The 1000 watt power handling is just that - power handling. It will need far less than that to produce great output. The new Mag still has the same goals for a driver, except now it's more focused on SQ and less thermal tons of power soak-up (the new one's won't handle 1800 watts all day / 2800 watts for burps like the previous versions).

I was originally planning on running an SAZ-3000D on a pair, but that's beyond overkill for what the new Mag's are going to be able to do off of lower amounts of power. I think I might do a SAZ-1500D on a pair just to show off how efficient they are. I'm also going to weigh the enclosure and subs, get everything metered, and then put in the previous Mags (the one's wer're sold out of now) and get it re-metered and re-weighed.

Or I might do four 12" BM's in a floor behind the rear seats to show off how shallow they are, which will also show off how much trunk room you can have while still having an arse load of bass. :)

But first I need to sell the 'teggy. :)

Mag with XBL^2 is awesome. I currently own a Mag and a Brahma and love them both.

Sucky thing is that I only have three cars to play with. My main car has the current Mag and I have no plans of replacing it. The second is my dad's car that I Never drive. And the third is my new Rav4 that I only drive when I'm with my girlfriend, so no need for loud volume, but I want it there anyway. I was thinking the Brahma can go in my dad's car, and the new Mag in the Rav4. But now you mention the BM is 3.5" and not that tall BM that we're seeing. As much as I love the Mag, it seems like the BM might be better for me. So, now I have to choose between SI subs. I hope both the Mag and BM come out about the same time. But I'll probably end up buying the sub that comes out first.

Now update your website!

Im with you boss. I would rather have better accuracy and a smaller enclosure than obnoxious loud no sq and giant boxes.(not comparing to old mag)

i am enjoying my current gen mag off 800watts(i dont even think i am giving that much power its a guestamate) sounds fine blends well up front.

new xbl^2 mag should sound tasty :turkey:

so im sure it will still have a good top end? Since usually people think xbl subs are only good 60 hz and below

Playing above 60hz should never be done by a subwoofer anyways, hell I don't like mine to play above 40 if I can help it.
