Semi-SPL sub choice

Recommended Posts

Alright ive been looking around at subs for a while now and ive kind of narrowed my search down a bit i want to keep it around 400 bucks if i do a single 12" or under 500 for two 10"s (i can buy one at a time). So the drivers ive been looking at so far are the Mach 5 SPL 12 which already has a triple stack magnet. The btl 12" with the third mag and longer coil (no cooling cant afford it), or two fi Q10"s. I like loud bass. I want to hear the words over the bass, but dont mind if the music is flooded with bass (running four boston coax's til i have money for two sets of components to replace em). This is mostly for daily driving I will be powering it with a PA a3000db (not a great amp but will do 2000 or so at 1 ohm) my electrical consists of two odyssey pc1200's in the cab and a pc 680 under the hood and a 200 amp ac delco alternator (tested out at like 193 amps not bad for the money) and four runs of two gauge welding wire 2 ground 2 pos (I left my run of 4 gauge I was using before as well).

Another option would be four Kicker l7 10"s in 3.2 cubes ported or four soundstream t5's

I am not looking for an SQ system, but i want something tolerable for daily listening but i wanna be able to turn it up at a car show or in a praking lot and show off. Im also concerned about the spl and btl having such a high Fs how low can these beasts go? I listen to rap, reggae, and r&b the occasional acoustic rock song.

I'm Up/Downgrading to a smaller system because i drive an s10 and my 15" tc-3000 in 3.8 cubic feet is just too big for me to fit a passenger comfortably. I really only wantto use 2-3.0 cubes if possible and dont wanna lose alot of output. I do want the sub to be musical and not a fart machine.

If you read that thank you and i appreciate any input!

Your whole preface is screwy to me. You say you want it loud but then are worried you are going to have a one note wonder? At high levels your ears can't hear the difference anyways, stop reading the specs and into them and decide what you really want. Beware your desire to "show off" is just immaturity revealing itself, make the system for yourself and your desires as it is a complete waste to spend all that money to just puff up your chest or compensate...

never mind ///m5, lol, he's no basshead. but he bring up a valid point, unless your competiting, car audio should be for teh user, not the crowd. if your worried about the crowd, you're building for the wrong reason.

is this a standard cab or xcab?

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

Its an ex-cab, and when i say show off im talking about having a passenger in the truck i wanna crank it and not have to worry too much i want something that can take alot of power all day long

I also turn it up to the full level where i set my gains almost every time i drive if it makes you feel anybetter I am a total bass head i have my ht for well balanced listening i like alot of bass in my car if that makes sense.

Really i want to hear a comparison of the spl-12 and the btl

I havent ruled out the two q's, and i know a few people who have em running off the same amp doing nice, im just not sure i want two 10"s and i dont have the room for two 12"s keep in mind i have two batteries and a two amps in the back takin up space and i still have the rear seats although im not sure why. This is the model with the jump seats on the side no third door.

I assume you are taking your back seat out to fit a box, btw the box will be your limiting factor with either setup.

Back seats will remain in the truck as of right now might take them out for battery placement, but the seats are part of my rear side trim and i want it to look presentable (to the best of my abilities). I have about 3 cubic feet i can fit comfortably.

As for the box designs i was looking either at a slot ported box 2.5-8 tuned to 36 hz, a pvc ported box 2.0-2.5 cubes with 2 4 inch external pvc ports, or a dual chambered ported box up to 3.0 cubic feet (would be my first time designing one i assume 4 inch pvc would probably be what i would use and i would need some help designing. Each would be run off my a3000db at 1 ohm getting hopefully 2kw.

So far what i have run was two MTX thunder 4500 12"s in 2.5 each tuned to 38 hz off 500 watts (tight budget sounded mediocre at best). My tc-3000 15" with the original ti cone in 5.0 cubes with 100 sq inches of port tuned to 30 off 500 watts (box was decent off that low power but was huge and went up to the top of my toolbox). And currently im running my tc-3000 with the black ti cone in 3.5 cubes with 55 sq inches of port tuned to 36 hz. All were slot ports. Im not a great box designer or builder, but i do what i can with the tools and experience i have.

That kinda sums it up hope that helps
