SSD vs. Icon

Recommended Posts

Hey guys i am looking for a single 15" setup, the amp i have to power either sub would be a mtx thunder elite 801d it puts out 851x1 rms at 2 ohms, i listen to about 70% rap and 30% rock i am mostly interested in getting loud i know that that is totally install dependant, so either sub would be ported at around 32-33 hz and in about a 3.5-4.0 cu ft enclosure. Either these two woofers or any others under $300 any information would be very helpful.

Thanks, Brian

Any particular reason for a single sub? If it's pure output you're looking for, I'd rather go with two $150 drivers in a box tuned higher...something like a new Tempest or Dayton HO 15" comes to mind. Both the SSD and Icon are fine speakers, but cone area is tough to argue with...

umm there isnt really a particular reason other than all of the companies like Fi, SSA, and sound splinter have woofers that i could only afford 1 and with the power i have i could really only power 1

Choosing between the two is a no brainer to me, the ICON isn't their entry level offering and the SSD is. Not that an entry level Fi is something to look down upon, but personally I'd definitely rather have the ICON.

On a side note, i'd like to add, that I just met M5//// and he got to hear the Hyundai first hand. It was built specifically for street beatn...i'll let him tell you what he thought...

i was leaning towards the Icon, but i just want to make sure it is an upgrade from the 2 12" kicker cvr's on a 500 watt overrated kenwood amp, in output and and just sounding clean

LOL. I don't think you'll have a problem hearing the difference of one 15" ICON over the CVR's.

You could do the Sundown/ICON combo the shop is offering right now and save a little money.

I am biased, so my opinon does not really count. Both the ICON and SSD are good choices.

I'm sure the SSD is great, but isn't the Icon more comparable to a Fi Q than a SSD?

Dual 1 ohm. Series for a 2 ohm final load.

dual 4 ohm isn't available on the iCON to my knowledge.

For the most part, yes. All three subs are meant for great sound in daily driving situations. They each excel with slightly different power and enclosure size, and in some cases, tuning. Either way, you are going to get a great sub.
