4 Q's with 6000 watts at 1 ohm vs. 4 Q's with 4000 watts at 2

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have been looking at FI for a while and I am thinking about getting 4 Q 12's. I will be running 2 MTX TA92001 amps which put out 3000 watts rms @1 ohm or 2000 @2 ohms. would 1000 watts

(2 ohm setup) be enough to max out the sub or should I run a 1 ohm setup and just turn it down a little bit and give it more power. also, I have about 10 cu ft of trunk space and i am probably going to run 2 cubes ported for each sub. Should i seperate each sub in its own 2 cube box with its own port or just build a big box with no seperaters and one big port. and one final question for those of you who have had experience with the Q's and the BL's. How much louder will the BL's get and how much SQ do you lose compared to the Q's (especially with the lows).

Thanks

Keith

what are you doing as far as electrical upgrades? i would say if you have the current to keep up go ahead and run it at 1ohms each. the Qs should take it just fine.

the box, i would at least seperate the it in half, so if one of the amps goes into protect you dont blow a sub because it is in too big of a box. it will also add rigidity to the box. you will definately need bracing no matter what.

I will be getting a new alternater. Ive never used bracing but ive never used that much power. why is it so important, will the box come apart if it is not braced.

how big of an alternator? are you getting a new battery? i would say you would need a HO plus the biggest battery that you can fit up front(kinetik or powermaster probably) and a second big battery out back to be able to run at 1 ohm.

the bracing will make your subs louder. i doubt that the box would come apart but it is possible. more bracing is always better, and a thicker baffle. but dont forget to take the displacement of the bracing into account when you design the box.

If you don't have the proper voltage you can damage your equipment. I would get a good alternator, and atleast 2-3 nice batteries. Not bracing properly can cause your box to flex. I watched a wall with 8 10s that was only 1 layer thick with no bracing flex more than the subs were moving- and that's a bad thing. There's a chance it can weaken the mdf/joints if it flexes bad enough, but you're losing dbs and sq.

6000/4=1500... didn't think that MTX was that underrated

If I were you I'd get 3-4 batteries plus the starter especially if your getting the BP Power option, which I would if your giving them 1500 watts each just to be safe.

I've got one 12" Q w/ the BP Power option with an Optima Yellowtop under the hood, a 220 amp alt and a Kinetik HC800 in back. Might be a little bit of overkill but better safe than sorry lol

I was thinking maybe a 200 amp alternater and a yellow top battery in the back and that would supply enough power. Maybe ill just do 2 15's so i can save a little money. Would it be worth it to get the bp power option or should i go with the standard setup. How do you think 2 fi q 15's with 3000 watts would compare with 2 jl 13w7's with 2 jl 1000/1 amps (just asking because my buddy thinks FI is a wannabe JL.)

Thanks

Keith
