New car...Help

Recommended Posts

long story short, my bros car is breakin down, hes leaving in a few months, he drive my car for a while, i get a new car. when bro gone, daddy drives my old car.

Well ive decided to get a 94 crown victoria, and stuck between two cars

1. Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor $1500 and 164k miles

2. Ford Crown Victoria LX Sedan $1900 103k miles

I like the way the white one looks much better than the blue one, its cheaper, and a "police interceptor" but the drawback is the mileage. I looked up both on carfax and both seem to check out good.

my one of my concerns is what the difference between a Police interceptor and a normal vic is, and ill throw a "what would you buy" question out there as well.

thanks for all your help.

The Crown Vic (at least stock) is one of the few things I've driven that handles worse than the vans :) Way too much understeer for me to get used to. But they're fun on the highway, in straight lines...

Different engines, different rear ends...probably other things changed but I don't know off hand.

don't get rear ended in one of those

i read about that...i like to live life on the edge lol...but still if i do get rear ended, its their freakin fault and they pay for my hospital bills! :drink40:

mmm. if it handles anything like my current car, ill be fine :) i guess its just performance mainly then...

so should i go for the high mileage one? i mean how high do they run before they die if decently kept?

Well, you get what you want I'll just suggest. I would shop for around 100K or less if you can, that is the life of the car and stuff will break more on the high mile....unless you intend to not have it long. I'd just get a taurus if you want a good cheap car, I can buy them all day long here cheap (<6yr old) and pretty much only the trans is what blows otherwise durable. CV is good car, yes its more like a living room couch on wheels but that can be changed some with rubbers in the springs. I thought they fixed the gas tank problem? Some they put bladders in cop cars. I have some family that just bought one, think a '00 for $6K with 50K miles like brand new. It has alloy wheels and painted trim, not bad looking and not bad driving. I forget but its a certain model like SE or something that had the cool wheels and stuff, it looks a lot better. The valve guides go out on the 4.6L with high miles. Lastly I would shop a lot, that is how you find the deals....and when you want to buy low ball them first. The last few cars I have bought were at auction or repo, were great deals, but most were broken and I can fix stuff some people can't.

I think in the years you are looking the LX and interceptor have pretty much the exact same stuff. For the sake of not having something that was beat on, I'd get the LX. Both are easily good for another 100k, but do beware the transmissions while they last twice as long as the GM crap they still tend to get abused in those things and can go out. The interior should be a lot nicer on the LX...Those cars are pretty much bulletproof and have surprisingly good gas mileage. I rented one a few weeks ago and actually averaged over 30 on the highway. I wouldn't expect that with either of those, but nonetheless for having a wondo-boatlike ride they do pretty damn well.

The Interceptor is gonna have a chity Interior but will have a H.O V8 with a little bigger alt to run the lights on the cop cars. Really it will come down to what are u looking to do to it.

Also cops rarely turn off there cars when on duty, so your car might say 164K but the motor itself has alot more time under its belt. If u do decide on either of these cars I have a 300amp Excessive Amperage Alt that will fit either of them for sale

because new car = new system :)

our family has bad experience with the taurus...wit hthe money we spent on tranny repairs, we could have bought a new car. I will mos def keep that in mind about the valves man...appreciate the info.

mmm now that you and quikstang mention it, cop cars were beat on, and looking at the carfax report, the LX was treated much better (smogged regularly and stuff)...bah changing my mind! lol

Really it will come down to what are u looking to do to it.

i just want to have a daily ride to work and school. add a system and bump away :) not sure if i really need that 300a for what im planning but for the heck of it: price?

Not sure if its too late, but the Interceptor packages usually include things like upgraded charging systems, for the lights and radios and other police gadgets. Sometimes the engine will be of a slightly higher performance variant, and it will include "severe duty" upgrades, like oil coolers. Also, the suspension maybe equipped with severe duty shocks, leading to a stiffer ride, although after 100k+ working miles, those are probably ready to be replaced. On some Interceptors, the transmissions are programmed to shifter more aggressively then the civvy models, and some even have limited slip diffs. The spring rates and ground clearance are higher, and the exhaust system comes without resonators.

This probably changed through the years. My point here, is that the Interceptors have some modifications suited for their service. There are sites dedicated to Interceptor Crown Vics, so you can read up more. :)
