got my badly conditioned 18" xxx today :D

Recommended Posts

i got my 18 XXX today. it has broken tinsel leads that were semi repaired with speaker wire. though still broken. the surround is scuffed bad all the way around but the duscap is still pretty. lol. motor is still in really good condition other than a scrape on the very bottom.

i tested the coils with a DMM and they both read 2.4-2.5. if i remember clearly(haven't tested my 15xxx in a while) though not 100% sure but aren't the coils supposed to be like at 1.7-1.8?

so what i was thinking was what should i do?? i still have about 2ft of tinsel lead i got from fi. i was contemplating on resoldering all the leads then just sticking it to a wall socket and take a vid, but that would be a waste of tinsel lead. or should i just dismantle it.

the reason i got the sub was mainly for the motor and will be resized to a 15. here's some pics, i have an AA 15" Atlas beside it for comparison. :P

Depends on how much tinsel lead is worth. If its going to cost you less then $5, then I'd say do it for the lolz.

:D

FYI when i wall soceted my XXX 15 i used a old plug... plugged it in and touched the wires going out of the sub... If u can soder u can just soder the plug and cord to the tinsil leads and litterally plug the sub in

hey todd, good to see familiar faces around since CSO has vanished. heard a few came over here so now I'm lurking in between forums lol.

i managed to get the 18 from a trade for my SX that i had reconed from a guy on CA.com.

now i would fix it but the sub can't fit into any application in my car. i currently run my 15 XXX in a fiberglass ported enclosure. for me to get this 18 in would require me to build a new box. plus the subs surround is in sooo bad condition it looks someone took the sub and laid it face down on the road and dragged it. it's ruff like sand paper all around. lol. another thing is the leads that were re-placed on here seem like the person that did it removed the center cap and soldered 12-14GA speaker wire from the inner coil to the wire terminals then epoxied the cap back on. which it may make it more difficult for me to re-solder the tinsels into the coil from the cap since removing the epoxied cap will be a total pain w/o trying to damage it.

basically the main reason i got the sub was for the motor. early next year in march i hope to sell my civic(stripped of audio/replaced with factory) and buy a new 08 VW Rabbit, and go for an SQ install with 2 15's sealed. so basically I'm just picking up the pieces before i put the puzzle together. :P

here's some pics of the surround and how the leads look to give ya an idea.

as for the Atlas 15. i had received it used(like new). built a sealed box for it and stuck it in a friends civic on an audiobahn a8002t. wired it to 2ohms and set the gains accordingly. well the next day he upped to RCA voltage output on his H.U(i had thought they were already set) and clipped the sub to all hell. lasted 1 day. :(

want it? name a price and it could be yours!

yeah a bunch of us are over at force, but that is kind of dead....

but about your SUb....DAMN those are ghetto tinsel leads! lol but i would almost vote to fix it...personally i would replace the tinsel leads and order a new surround from Fi and then use that for anything you can...lol it'd probably be a killer HT sub...that's just my opinion...i'd fix it just because i have always wanted an 18" XXX

about the atlas...i'll pay shipping on it :)

well i took the sub apart today, and damn was it dirty! i easly managed to remove the XXX cap very easily and can still be used for another sub :D

well after breaking off the glue that was used to hold the wires in place then de-soldering the wire connections i found that the actual leads coming off the former are tooo short to re attach tinsel leads. so i continued to dismantle everything.

one thing that had me a little puzzled was that there wasn't seperate tinsel lead holes for each tinsel lead. only 1 hole coming out of each side where both speaker wires ran. on further inspection of wear onto the felt pads there was only markings of the center of the pad where the 2 wires came from the 1 hole, yet no signs of wear of a 2 hole lead like traditional setups are. :huh2:

what i did not know was that this 18 or any XXX 18 in general had 2 seperate spiders, plus they both looked to be different types. was this a custom XXX that i tore apart? :huh2: if it was oh well.

upon removing the cone assembly i found a chit load of saw dust inside the motor. since thie basket offers no cooling besides the pole vent it is odd as to how SOOOO much dust got in there. oh well.. tomorrow i'll be taking the motor to a friends to use his drill with grabbit bits to remove the basket. here are some pics.

wow that's almost as dirty as your mother...lol

so are you going to do the re-cone yourself or have RE do it?....damn i miss when RE was more like Fi...when i could buy 2 12" SEs for 250 bucks

i don't know if i'll recone these myself. depends really. for now i have the motor which is the important part. i still have to get another amp plus have to look into an HO alt. so i'd like to save some money though i'd like to keep it with the OG parts from RE. plus it's 2 recones that will be needed as i want to run 2 fresh 15's, not 1 fresh and 1 used. lol, i'm already planning out my tax returns... 2 more months!

yeah it would still be nice to get a pair of SE's for 250, but i saw somewhere on ebay that a pair could come around 350 shipped which isn't tooooo bad when your comparing it to the quality of them. i'm pretty much one of those that would rather just pony up the added price cause i know that what i'm getting is worth every penny. others may not see it as that but to each their own.
