I'm considering a switch.....

Recommended Posts

I like loud and yes the 4 Q15's Sealed in LOUD!!!!, but I think I may change up so I don't have such a huge box in the back. When I was running only 2 Q15's ported in my magnum, my boy was running the single 18" BTL ported in his Impala and we were hitting identical #'s. He was pushing the BTL with a Power Acoustic 2000 and I was pushing the 2 Q's with a US Amps MD2. We both metered 152.7 legal on an AC mic. Once I stepped up to a 4 pack of Q15's and an IA 40.1 @.5ohms, I got about a 5 db increase and alot of air movement, which makes for nice hair videos..... fing05.gif I guess what I am wondering is....with an 18" BTL in 8cubes ported properly and tuned to 32hz and the same power I am giving the 4 Q's, will I still be able to move air like I was? People have been coming to some of the local shows just to sit in my car and have their hair blow around.....

I figure that I will be louder then what he was metering because I am more then doubling the power and giving it a bigger enclosure and more port area, but no, I don't expect to be as loud as the 4 Q15's are right now. It will be easier for me to dominate my class locally too, so I can get more trophies.

What do you guys think about the change?

I am typing alot because I am trying to keep my mind off of my phone just getting stolen....UUHHG!

1 18" btl has the same cone area as 1.5 15" btls.

i would say your at a HUGE disadvantage in cone area, so i dont see a single 18" btl pulling off a hair trick or getting as loud.

i would stick with the q's

Hmm...hair trick w/ one 18, yah havent heard it done....but w/ the right specs? possibly...anyway:

Ok....I guess you're right. So that means I need to design a bigger box to go ported with the 4 Q15's....I have a basic idea, but I don't think it will fit, so back to the drawing board. Also, the person I have building the box wants to use 1" mdf instead of 3/4" so that affects me specs too......man, I remember when I thought 1 12" sub was loud.....what's happened to me? lol

Question about cancellation.....

I have 2 subs firing back and 2 subs firing up. Thats the only way I can fit that many in the magnum. For the ones firing up, what is the minimum distance that should be between the face of the subs and the ceiling? I dont want cancellation or to restrict the air from the back.

oh come on man!! go with the one 18!!! i know, i know 4 15's is impressive, big tymers "four 15's didn't see no fire...then i heard BOOM from the amplifiers!!" just got done looking at another thread where a guy hit 154 flat with an 18 btl, not sure what power here's the vid

i know it's on a wall and stuff, but if ur not expecting to be as loud as the 4 15's....still don't see how you plan on saving space, that one 18 ported is gonna take a lot of space. i would put it in a 10 cube box. also hair tricks shouldn't be a problem at all.

i'm moving massive air with a single 15" Q, although going to attempt hair trick, don't think it will be the best but one 18 no problem!!

I hate the change, but I'd be looking for a very different goal than you...

I have decided......No change!

Only thing different is going to be my box. I am going with 11.6ft^3 (after displacement) all single chamber with (5) 4"round X 11" long ports.

It's slightly on the small side for 4 15's, but...I will obtain my goals with it.

A box is always a good first step.

Keep the old box too, just incase you dont like how the new one sounds

yeh, that's kind of a smaller box but it should still sound good, i love the SQ and accuracy and of my Q 15!!

have you seen the OP's hair trick?

doubt hes going to accomplish anything similar off 1 18. you need excursion for that and lots of it. you gotta get that air going in that cabin.

there is only so much you can do with the 18 trying to pull a hair trick. once you reach xmax, your done. the 4 15's will move more air.

sure that guy hit 154 (who knows what mic though), but off how much power? and at what note? he could be near tuning for all we know, and not getting much excursion. sure 154 sounds good, but it doesn't guarantee any hair trick, especially at 50+hz

very true, sorry about that, I also thought about it after i posted it, i thought "that doesn't sound right" LOL

oh and not the best, but I think proves one 18" BTL very possible for hair trick. Even this one i think would be better with window rolled half way up.

I know I know, not huge, but I never said it could pull off a huge hair trick just saying It would be able to! lol

Not sure on difference in specs from loaded BTL to MT either.

P.S. that sub in the vid is only receiving ~1600 watts

Agree with the 4 15Q. I had 2 15Q's and it definitely loud. But I'm not sure about the 4" port though. It seems that the Q like larger port area.

It's five 4" round ports, not one single port.

Would SIX ports be louder then FIVE, or will it just cut down on port noise? My enclosure is not being built until next week after SEMA so I can still play with the calculations a bit.

Should be louder with more port area...

That's really not enough, and why your experiencing noise...

Maybe I'll go with 6 ports. Either way, it will be louder, and that's my goal, not the SQ. It still sounds cleaner the most setups at the shows down here.

probably becuase they're not running Fi, lol. you need to just configure how much port you need for w/e tuning you want, all this 4 ports, 6 ports doesn' t mean jack to me. remember, if it's a 4" rule of thumb is 4 inches from sidewall and 4 " off the backwall. you can't just throw those tubes anywhere.
