Uh-Oh!

Recommended Posts

Posting for a friend..he's had his BTL for week....and we are both kinda curious how this happens and if there is any type of warrenty, figuring the VC is still 100% fine, the sub still plays and all.

P.S. I can't seem to get a response from Scott....I still need a shim to align the gap and one screw to mount the basket to the motor (had to use an easy out on one of them).

To my knowledge....it was never pierced. When he brought it over the first day he had it in, it was not pierced at all and as far as i know he didn't put anything in the trunk with it...and I knwo there isn't anything it could hit.

This is a lil out there and I don't think it would matter but the sub is tuned extremely low with ~2500 watts. I don't think it should matter though.

never seen something like that happen, but i have seen surrounds rip, but only on stock speakers that have been used for about 10 years, and the foam surround around the cone falls apart presenting what looks like a tear. this is why you don't touch the woofer when playing and all that good stuff, bad things happen. surrounds are cheap though and easy to re-do yourself, i've done it.

Ive seen it occur for a couple of reasons... one being the one mentioned that something cut, pierced, or otherwise reduced the structural integrity of the surround and it failed, the other is when the sub is pushed beyond its mechanical limits (99% of the time having a subsonic filter set up incorrectly for the power and tuning) and things literally beat themselves to death.

If there wasnt an "oops" during installation and nothing was rubbing on it in the trunk, my next vote is for over excursion.

Normally we do not cover ripped or torn parts. In the ultra off chance that it was a surround problem (never had one with this same tooling used for many years) we would gladly cover it.

As for your personal request... what was this for again? Hard for me to stick a forum name to a real name :)

May of been over excursion... Subsonic set at 25...box tuned at 29.

And it was for Adrian ([email protected]) I bought 2 recone kits to make my 12s into 15s... I need a shim and one screw to hold the basket to the motor.

to shim the gap get some Manilla folders and cut them to fit inside the vc former use as many of those as u can while still being able to put the vc in and out

wcjn8g.jpg like that

also playing below tuning causes unloading. Thats probably why it did that.

Box was tuned at 29hz though.... at 25hz subsonic... that really shouldn't be unloading should it? I mean how many damn songs get that low... only song I know he was really playin that low was a 26hz bassline, like I said he had it less than a week.

I can think of a few, but I'd bet money that's not damage from over-excursion. You'd hear it...

Jim...what would be your guess??

Also Scott when you see this one.... I forgot that on one of the baskets you sent me is missing the push terminals.

I would agree JimJ, but hey it's not my sub. lol at unloading when sub plays under box tuning. a guy has a 15" mtx 9500 in a 8 cuft box. TUNED TO 55HZ!! says well my EQ gets it to play the tones under that so i pound the lows and the higher bass, then has puzzled look after the sub seems to be "laggy" This was at a sound advice who charges big money for installs and stuff and this guy was a full time sales rep. <----another reason why I do my installs myself.

oh, and the MTX surround was plenty fine, it could be possible that an object did come in contact with the surround and it was just hard to notice the damage until the woofer finished itself off.

I may have mentioned it in an e-mail but I don't remember talking to you about it. I got everything else I needed courtesy of Lowes :), just still need that terminal. And what would a re-cone cost so I can tell my friend?
