mach5 pr?

i think i'm stealing andy's idea where he used a sonotube, passive radiator setup. i have a maw12 and a kicker kx400.1, will be using a tube.....now, i need the pr. other then the ones from boston and tc, anyone know where i can get a mach 5 one? lol. actually, looking for a budget one. maybe a mach5 cone/basket?(i know that's not the best way to do this, but it is a budget system in a budget car)

thoughts? ideas? links?

Parts Express sells Dayton ones up to 15", and Madisound & Solen sells Seas ones (though I think Seas stops at 8" or 10", IIRC).

i'm thinking that's too much money for the hooptie...

so about a 6th order bandpass? lol...i just want loud for this car. could care less about overall sq, for now.

in any case, just got the new PE catalog, and they have some cheap PRs in there, and they look similiar to the mach5. so i think i'm going that route again. will be installing the system this weekend in a temporary sealed box, but am thinking the sonotube/pr will be the final design.

what are the advantages to the sonotube? and any links to pr tuning? will probably be using the 12 pr, though the thought of using the 15 and messing with people's minds has some appeal.

Well, building Sonosub is certainly much quicker. You can have a ready-go "box" in a couple of hours. No need for bracing since vibes are dispersed evenly around the tube. Just slap on end caps, drill some holes and you're done.

Looks, placement and size are a few of the downfalls to Sono's.

I have not played much with PR's in the past, and info on exactly how to tune them is somewhat limited. You can probably start with punching the numbers into WinISD Pro to see what you get.

this is more of a trial and error project, and since it's in the hooptie, something that can be thrown away if needed. the hooptie already has a couple of prs in it ( the front 3.5s are in enclosures with 5.25 prs) so i thought why not. teh prs are like 15-16 bucks in teh new pe catalag (or something like that) and it would be cool to play around with one.

thanks mark for the info....it'll be a weekend project that'll begin soon. right now the maw12 will probably jsut be sealed as i have that box lying around.

oh, i will. it'll be a 12" pr (price is only $27) and a sonotube, maybe "V" shaped. i've got lots of thoughts going through my head.

Scott is right - go with either a 15" or two 12's. Since you're using a Sono, a single 15" should fit the bill nicely.

Of course, that would make your Sono much larger than you anticipated...

after reading that page, i guess i picked a good sub, lol. with a qts of .27 it fits right in the recommended range for a pr.

so, to get this to layman's terms...

i design a ported enclosure for the maw12..

i then do the equations to determine what the two prs "effective"port radius would be

i then get the length of port, and figure out it's volume

do the math and convert volume to weight and that's what i need the prs to weigh.

and simple test is to send sine waves at the pr in the otherwise empty encloure to dtermine if it's tuned correctly

if sd of each radiator is 480cm^2, what is the effective radius of a pair of them? i get 153, but i'm sure that's wrong.

ok, double check my math...

if i'm using a pair of 12" pr with an sd of 480cm^2, my effective radius (combined) is 10". this relates to a 20" diameter port, (or two 10" ones, length is 175.75 per that way) in a 2ft^3 box means a 351.5" long port for a tuning of 34hz. converted to volume and then to weight, that means roughly 433g divided between the prs. each pr has a mms of 200g, so i would need to add 16.5g to each pr for a rough start?

btw, the pr part number i'm looking at is SD315 at partsexpress.....

and does 2ft^3@34 with ~475wrms sound ok to you mark?
