New budget system in the works

Recommended Posts

Ok so most of you have heard me ranting in the ihop about this for a couple months. But now i'm starting to overanalyze and getting burnt out. I'm putting a system (yo) in my father's vehicle. His hearing sucks, tone deaf, badly in one ear, bla bla bla. basically it's just something that will sound "good", his current system sounds like ass and is so harsh i can't stand to hear it. The new system just has to be loud enough to be listenable(is that a word?) at driving speeds. lets start with what i have so far

4ch RF amp (thank you ramos) for mids and highs, yes, i will be going active

2ch butler/phaze amp, i'll probably use this as the sub amp, why? because i have it already (75x2 @4ohm)

2 ca18rly

2 p18rnx Not sure if i'll be using the polys or the papers in his doors, but probably the paper cones

Now on to what i need.

Tweets, the seas should go plenty high to match with any large format tweet, and he has plenty of room in the dash for them.

-thinking about http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_i...roducts_id=1496 or

-would like to stay under 30-40 for the tweets but it's starting to look like I'm going to get a hell of a lot more product if i bump the price a little.

Head Unit -- need something older and capable of running fully active, i still need to talk to ryan about his eclipse, but i'm looking at nearly anything here, a whole lot of time alignment and EQ is not necessary.

--alpine 9813 (any other lower levels have good crossovers?)

--eclipse (almost any)

--pioneer (always been a fan, but hard to find the older models with good crossovers)

Sub - this one is easy, if it's cheap and i can run it at 4 or preferrably 8ohm, i'll be happy with it

I have not heard those tweets, as soon as I get my act together I will have a review on the neo SEAS tweets. As for head unit, I would get from Ryan first, if not we can start searching the used market for something decent. But if you don't mind me asking, why are you going active if his hearing is not very good? He might not be able to really tell the improvement. Just thought it would be one way to keep the cost down if you could use a normal HU. My vote for sub would be Assassin 8, but my vote is biased so take it with a grain.

going active because i don't have any urge at all to go passive. I may do a passive set in mom's car but for dad i'm just wanting the flexibility. plus i already have way too many mids laying around with no use (i hate those deals that can't be passed up) and for the cost of passive components i'm guessing i'll be right at the difference between HU costs.

For the sub i'm being uber cheap, the car is a hatchback so i'm not concerned with output at all, i'm 90% sure any 8" or 10" sub will be more than sufficient. I wish the SD-1 was just a little cheaper, i'd jump on the 10 in a heartbeat.

btw if anyone has/sees any tweets (small or large format) for cheap LMK

Alpine 9811, 9813, 9833, 9835 *won't list the ghey-touch shit

Eclipse 8053, 8443, 8454, 8455

Pio 9800 & 880

I am leaving a bunch out but I am tired and going to bed. Wanted to give you a few to choose from though.

Not so sure on the Hi-Vi stuff, most of it sounds cheap and considering how much nicer the mids in the set you are proposing are it would be hard for me to recommend them. Those CA's can play pretty high, I would feel better about using this guy in that price range:

As for the sub, dig for something used. I have seen a ton of JL w0 for that range and for the power you have would work well.

ahh that's quite perfect, the alpine units were really throwing me off, i've never been a fan so i didn't know any numbers to even look up.

Side note, I might be willing to part with one of my old MTX original Blue Thunders. (10")

i like the mach5 idea for the sub side of things....really can't beat there bang for the buck.

might want to try to locate a pair of re re 8's if possible. i have a pair of clarion (exact same subs) in the garage, with a ported pre fab box (i just need to enlarge the mounting holes a bit). what were you looking at price wise? i might let them go jsut to make some room. (i'll use my rl-i 8 for the boy's room again)

i'll let the others chime in on tweets (though i do have a pair of planars that aren't doing anything either) and h/u 's.

and i have a audio control eqs, though that probably won't help a ton.

what kind of planars? i've always wanted to play with a set of those.

price wise is really hard to put a $$ figure on. I don't want to break $100 for the subs, i'd love to find a 10" for $50, that'd hurt the wallet a lot less.

Probably will try to stay under $200 for the HU (i think with enough searching i can get much lower than this as well, i've been eyeballing some eclipses and alpines on ebay that i think i can get for ~$100).

neo something or others, lol...i'll look them up and post a link in a bit. i got them from ryan1, was wanting to possibly use them in house, but as of yet, i've ahd them for about two years and they are still in the box ryan1 sent them to me in.

i'll talk to the boy, if he'll let me and impedence is right, i'll let the clarions and the box go for $125 shipped.

I really don't have a use for the box, but would be interested in the subs if i can't find a single 10

for the sub look at the eclipse sw8000. it's realtively inexpensive, has great linear response, huge amounts of excursion and can handle a great deal of power at 4 ohms. downside. it nees a large box. sealed i think was good around 2 cubes and around 3.5 ported.

yea i'm not looking for something with a huge amount of linear excursion, tons of power handling or anything like that. thanks for the replies though.

I picked up 4 used (store returns) infinity 12" DVC reference subs on ebay this spring that are IB in my car now for <$40 each tmd. I ran one in a sealed and a ported box and the 1.25cf box was too small for my liking (I want 30Hz not 50) but the sub worked fine on a ppi 75x2rms and went fairly loud for listening/driving. Could not overpower it in a box with half its rated rms. Picked up even cheaper an explod P5 12, the black pentagon 1300w one. It got somewhat low in a small box, lower than the infinity did in same box. Still nothing like my IB setup but not bad for what it is. I stuffed the 1.1cf recommended sealed box and could even turn my crossover way up and nothing above about 100Hz really comes out of the explode, but it was dropping big at 30 too. Note that I do hate sony. The explode sounded worse when I put a quality 300wrms amp in and hammered it harder, it got to be a one note wonder I think with more power. I imagine the infinity could be tuned more. I know of a NIB SW6200 12" dvc Eclipse for sale.

Also ran a 10" MTX 4500 on that ppi amp and it worked pretty well in a mtx .85cf sealed box that is recommended for it. Had a nice sound for one ten and worked good with that amp, I think it was rated for 225rms. Kept it here for a spare it worked so nice quality-wise for the few dollars I have into it. Not sure if this helps you but that is what I tried, and I like some thump but quality more so.
