Fi BTL do they sound that bad?

Recommended Posts

i dont trust reviews in the manafacturer forum for any brand.

That's pretty silly.

No one forced each owner to buy the ICON. No one gave them money to write a review. They're not earning any "brownie" points with the manufacturer for saying nice things about the sub.

The ICON was intended as a SQ woofer. Unintentionally it just so happens to get pretty loud and still retain a great deal of SQ while in a larger ported box.

I'd just get a btl and be done with it. If you want a hard-hitting sub that gets loud, but aren't really going for an sq setup (which is pretty obvious you aren't ;) ) I'd get it. I was pretty worried about the sq of the BTL when I bought my first one, but after hearing it I was very pleased.

i have midbass, it doesnt have as much emphasis as id like, i plan on switching out to a dedicated 8" tang band mid eventually

I dont want something that sounds mechanical, something that sounds good

You don't have to have a perfectly flat system to sound good for most people. I want a loud street beater, not a sq competition vehicle. Sorry M5 but from what i see on the forum you really enjoy making people trip up. I didnt post in the SQ forum, i have more than adequate explanations on my goals, i am looking for driver reccomendations, not an arguement about what SQ really is thanks though.

A couple things. 1st I never once recommended that you focus on SQ at all, in fact the exact opposite I was encouraging you; however, you did claim you didn't want exaggerated bass in one post and state you don't have enough midbass already and then you want 2kw and BTL's which will give you exactly what you asked to not have in hugely exaggerated bass. Considering what you state you want I said you should buy it, perhaps the truth in my response tickled you the wrong way but still it will do what you are looking for. If you think I trip people up you must only read a very small portion of this forum...

When i searchsd for the icons that seemed to pop up alot. People were just saying they are SQ only. The only guys i heard say they were loud were guys with sq oriented installs. which is alot different from a street beater type situation. Its also hard to find anything about them other than in the SSA section of this forum, i dont trust reviews in the manafacturer forum for any brand.

Seeing that there are very few ICONs out there, and not everyone who has one posts online, there are not many reviews out yet. You can check the good reviews it got that were posted on other forums. ;)

Thanks for all of the responses and m5 i didnt mean to come off as an ass. Im still kinda debating whether to get two q's or a single btl, I just got a new top assembly for the tc3k, ill see how that works out for now. I think a BTL may be in my future. I alraedy have a 2kw amp i was just hoping to get the most out of it.

Ive owned BTLs and they sound just fine. Not going to impress a hardcore sq guy, but if you're lookin for a daily sub that gets down and sounds pretty good, you'll be happy.

Of course if you're goin for sq, a couple sealed Qs will romp a BTL. If you do a ported box on the Qs, they should be very close in output to a single BTL on the same power.

And as for DDs..... Unless I was goin for a fartbox, Id never run DD. Ive heard a bunch of 3500s and 9500s and they sound like complete ass imo. Not distorted or anything, just hollow tone to them. Do they meter? Definately. But Id NEVER EVER run a 3500/9500 in a musical car.

was the box you heard them in geared for spl or sq? cuz as you are already aware of im sure, it depends on the install.

Heard them in strictly daily boxes, daily SPL boxes, and straight up SPL boxes.

They meter loud.... I knew a kid with a single 9515 in the cargo area of an Xterra. He could do almost a 149 in dB Drag. Defintely impressive for 1 15 and a Memphis 4k, but it sounded hollow just like all the others, so it didnt seem loud to your ears whatsoever.

The 9915 to me sounds well ya kinda hollow in a way. but this was in a db drag and well the install was a bit ghetto to me. I was thinking it was the install.

Every install Ive heard with a DD has been like that. Never hear the 1000, 1500, or 2500 series, so I cant comment on those, but Id never run a 3500 or 9500. If I wanted SPL I would just get a T3 Audio TSNS.... Its cheaper and would stomp a 3500/9500 anyday.
