new Mag news

Recommended Posts

Well...you're going to get your wish.

I've been tossing around a few different designs and I'm going the route of a shallower driver, equally as efficient (if not more efficient), same power handling, and considerably improved SQ compared to our current Mag. Peak-to-peak excursion is going down by 0.6" but I think that's a small price to pay for how many improvements are being made to the Mag line.

Basically what's going to happen is this:

Improved SQ.

Smaller, more specific enclosure requirements.

Equal low-end capability to the current Mag.

Equal SPL ability.

Shallower mounting depth (by a full inch!)

Improved moving parts (cone, suround, spiders, vc leads, are all being upgraded with new, more linear, stronger, components)

I got this off of caraudio.com and I couldn't find anything close to all this news on the "official" SI site. I understand this may not even be the chosen driver, but this IS the driver I want, specifically the Shollower mounting depth (by a full inch!) and secondly but not as important - smaller, more specific enclosure requirements. If this ends up being the new Mag, it means I'll be getting this to stick in my Rav4, which my current Mag was supposed to go into be can't because of mounting depth issues. This also means I gotta say sorry to Fi and Soundsplinter because I think I'll stick with the Mag.

Saying that though, This needs to be quoted:

Anything discussed so far about the Mag is pending testing Nick and myself will both be testing the prototypes until we are SURE that the final design meets all of our expectations for what the Mag should be.

BTW, here's the car audio link:

Well it would have been here, but someone up-rooted it on ca.com and was asking me questions. I usually let my reps know in advance, and have done so...but just haven't posted up on here because I've been too busy.

Sorry guys.

Sorry guys.

No problem. I just thought it was pretty big news because I was still picturing a triple stacked Mag before reading that thread. Also, before reading that thread, I had no intentions of getting a new Mag because I don't have an extra vehicle to put it in and I had no intentions on getting rid of my current Mag. That has changed since reading it. I honestly didn't want to be the one that posted this, because obviously, I have nothing to do with building the Mag, but I couldn't resist posting something cool like this.

Ok, here's a little more information for you SSA people.

The basket used on the new Mag is going to be enclosed (or a wrap-around style).

The mounting depth should be under 135mm (5.5")

Voice coil diameter is going to be 3", aluminum former, copper windings.

It will have a shorting ring in the motor to help with inductance issues (even though the inductance is being cut in half compared to our current Mag I'm still putting a shorting ring in there)

As of now the basket will be black with a chrome or polished backplate.

Paper cone/foam surround (we've been doing research on how cone material affects sonic performance - and yes, even if cone breakup is above your crossover point, lower harmonics still creep into the subwoofer bandwidth and color the sound - which is why we have chosen to go with the particular blend of paper that we're going with).

Power handling will be 1000 watts.

Enclosure sizes for the 12" are 0.8 to 1.1 cubes sealed and 1.8 cubes ported to 33 Hz.

Better SQ, MUCH shallow mounting depth, slightly lower peak excursion, same efficiency, and the same ability to get really loud if you want to.
