Right now I have a 2.2cubes @ 32hz with 34.50sq.in. of port area with 1100rms for my daily driver. I want to build a pure spl box and a pure sq box before the winter comes. I have 34inches in width and 13inches in hieght. I need to know the tunning, port area, and cubes for each enclosure. I heard spl enclosures should be small and have alot of port area. I'm not sure what kind of boxes I should build so i'd figure i'd ask here since noone knows the icon better than you guys, Thankz.

Tune it a lot higher for SPL...probably around 45 hz

A 1999 saturn sl2, I want to build a SPL box to see what numbers the icon can put up, i need a little more info than tune higher, I already know that. I need to know how much port area and how many cubes i should use. I'd figure you (the owners/team members) already know what I need to compete. Also I want to see the best sq i can get out of the icon too.

Typically, for SPL bigger is better. There is a line not to be crossed of course with the size of your box. All this is dependent on your car. Tuning once again will be dependant on your cars resonant frequency. Port area is allways trial and error. These questions come up alot, and generally it's allways vechicle dependant. I really wish I could help more on this vehicle but with out going through the trail and error myself, i'm not sure the perfect answer. you have a 12" ICON right? I would start with a 3.0 Cubic foot box and start from there. Port area you'll have to play with, as well as tuning! Keep us posted.

Remember, this is all trail and error, and argubley the funnest part of the car audio "game"

Well there has been sucess lately from people going with small boxes with external ports and running a ton of power. They are trying to fight impedance rise that usually occurs with larger boxes, but they again you gain efficiency. There are always give and takes that you can only know through testing. The ICON does seem to favor a slightly larger box then most, but does well in small box installs for normal appications. I have not done too much SPL work with the ICON because that was not its intended design, but it can get loud. We need to invest in a TermLab in the future and I have more info then.

i would start with a 6" aero port, and a 1cuft^3 net box...add all the power you can (1100wrms isn't going to cut it unless you go big box)..and go up from there. i can't see the icon needing anymore port area then that, but as mentioned, it's mostly trial and error.

also, grab a sealed box roughly the same size as the ported box you are going to build/have built. face the sub in the approximate position that you will for spl. then measure your car's frequency response, ie: start burping tones and recording them with the sealed box. it'll get you pretty close to your car's resonance frequency and you can tune from there.

sq box? what is your predominant music taste? i'd wager your current enclosure is pretty close as far as ported box is concerned.

and i've got a term lab that draws more dust then anything, lol....
