IB question

I hate to ask this question, but I need to for my own clarification. I have been seeing a lot of IB setups lately, both on this forum and also in magazines. I listen to almost all heavy rap. Would an IB be totally out of the question due to all the extreme bass? SHould I just stay with my 2 10" BL's that I am planning? I like the look of them and the fact they take up so little room, I just have never seen one perform and dont know how they stand.

Sorry for any inconviences, but it would be nice to know.

If you listen to rap, the biggest benefits of IB - very low frequency extension and very smooth frequency response - are going to be lost on you.

Not to mention you're going to give up a lot of output.

I wouldn't recommend it in your case.

IB is not the loudest subwoofer configuration, nor is it for a system that does not have excellent midbass from the front end.

Basically, it gets very low, but expectedly, the power handling and output is reduced. Most rap that I have played in my setup actually is played by my midbass because they tend to overemphasize the 50-60Hz region.

That being said, my single 15" subwoofer in the IB configuration was able to TL @ 133.6 @ 30Hz on 350W.

Thanks for the quick replys guys. It is nice to know what they can do for future reference. I may have to try one on my girls car cause she listens to a lot of R&B and pop that doesn't have very much bass in the first place. I will stay with my 2 10's. THat being said, I dont know squat about active and passive crossovers, so for now I am gonna have a shop deal with that stuff till i learn more.

LOL! That is actually y i am going with 10's, to save as much room as possible. Using 2 10's I will only use up half my trunk, now where to put the amps.

Cone area is your friend in an IB install, I would recommend not using 10's.

Right, or use more subs. I've had good luck with 4 10s IB but that was listening to music with lots of bass, and not running the bass that much louder than the rest of the system just to make noise. Once you hit xmax you are done, and it should not take that much wattage to do that typical is maybe half the sub's rms rating at most. But, you are moving air and that is what gives good bottom, spl is so-so. My 4 12s shake, play 30Hz like nothing and will go lower. I would recommend you start with twice the subs you would use in a box, maybe more if you really need output.

I have the midbass problem; the subs are great under 50Hz and you feel it....but then my comps can't make enough 100Hz to keep up. I can turn the subs up higher Hz, but then you loose some of the huge under 50Hz because they always roll off slow but roll off just the same. Plus they start getting directional if you are looking for sq. On the other hand I would need a huge likely ported box to play the 30Hz I can now.

Make sure you get subs that will work well IB, some will not. They have to be good at returning to center without a box. Obviously you don't need real high wattage subs, hitting xmax all the time will break or wear them out you will never blow the vc with normal use.

To get the output you have at 30Hz you would probably actually need a really large sealed box.

I dont think we have enough room to put in 4 10's, maybe 3. If that were the case, 2 15's would probably work the same "magic". I asked in another thread about running active crossovers in order to have midbass/mids, etc.
