what size sub is optimal

Recommended Posts

hey everyone. i'm in the process of piecing togethor my first system and i'm trying to figure some basic stuff out right now. i listen to a lot of house/trance and other electronic music, with some rock and a lil rap every once and awhile. my friends that have subs (mtx, jl w3), their setups sound great with rap but get muddy and don't seem like they keep up with the music when any kind of electro is played. I want my sub to remain clear and crisp. should i be looking for smaller a smaller 10" sub, or if i get more of an sq sub such as the ss rl-p will a single 12 or even a 15 be able to suit my needs? thanks.

I'd say go with either 10's or 12's from Fi (specifically the Q) or JL Audio W6v2.

The size of the sub is the least of your concerns, it certainly by itself won't make any difference how "quick" it sounds.

Unless it is a rather low budget job. A 15" Rlp would do what you need it to very nicely in a low tuned box.

x2 I ran 15" RL-P's at 30 & 32Hz and they sounded very good for all types of music at both tuning freqs. Tight bass with kick when it was supposed to be there. Very nice sub that's often overlooked lately....

thanks a lot for clearing this up for me, my redneck friends don't know chit. well the rl-p 15 is definately an option for me now, especially since i'll only be getting one sub. the fi q actually was the other woofer i had in mind, but i really don't know how to make the decision because none of my friends even know these brands, let alone have setups i can hear. do most of you make your boxes or have a shop custom build it for you? i'm probably going to get a new vehicle soon so i can't justify the 350 they want for a custom enclosure. if i were to have a box designed around one of the subs, do you think home depot could do the cuts (i have practically NO tools)?

Home depot can do the cuts, I would keep it simple for them though. Try not to make too many angles and such. BTW, you should also consider ascendant audio, I'm a rock and roll guy, just bought a havoc 18", and loving it. I upgraded from 4 10's, and not looking back. Enclosure size is the MAIN determining factor to get the sound you want out of these type of subs...when you are talking sealed. I do not run ported, never liked them, so I have no suggestions for that route, but some of the other guys here do.

Good luck

You located anywhere near chicago as I build boxes for a decent price. Otherwise for the price a shop charges you could buy a circular saw, jigsaw, and cordless drill and build your own.

Plenty of guys on here that can walk you through the process...

i've hard about aa, but the havoc line is a little more than i'de like to spend. actually i'm located in the western suburbs of chicago, but i think i'de like to have a go at building the box myself. however, if something gets fubar i'll keep you in mind. the amp that i was considering was the Hifonics BXi 1206D. it's pushing 900w at 2ohms and 1200 at 1ohm. will this amp work with either the ss or fi sub mentioned?

do you recomend a sealed box as this will be my first build? i don't know anything about box tuning and all that, but i know theres plenty of info out there to look at.

The Fi Q would work very well, along with the RL-p. The RL-p tends to favor ported boxes.

edit: I should mention the ICON, but I don't want to be a pushy salesman.

The Type R falls behind any of the speakers mentioned in clarity and accuracy.

15" RL-P in around 3.5cubes tuned to 32Hz would be very nice for a mix of SQ & SPL. And yes it'll sound much better than an R.

Good luck on the box build. I can do up a design if you give me the dimensions you can fit.

thanks a lot

just wondering, is the sq from one of these going to blow away the type r's i planned to get way back?

I won't be as nice. The Type R sounds like arse. The options you are looking at are on a completely different level and WAY, WAY better.

i would definately appreciate that once i've decided on the sub.

if any of you have had experience with both the q and rl-p, what are the noticeable differences between them?

i need to keep in mind that i may be moving to a car with a smaller trunk.
