does the wires need to be changed when downgrading an amp?

Let's say I'm running the Sundown 1000 watt amp with 2 gauge power/ground wire and an 80amp fuse near the battery powering a 12" Fi Q. If I want to change my sub to a 8" Soundsplinter RL-i, and replace the Sundown with a P.G. 400 Watt amp, does the 2 guage wire need to be changed? If not, then does the fuse need to be changed?

BTW: I don't have those amps or subs. My main question was the wire question. I realize the Sundown would actually be good for a dual 4 ohm RLi-8. But let's forget all that.

Nope..

Still better to have a larger guage of wire than a smaller guage helps with the flow of the power from the batt. Fuse doesn't need to be changed either. As you stated earlier I believe the sundown would be a good choice for that sub as well. Save yourself some money.

The fuse at your battery is really for the cable, so if it shorts it will blow fuse and not melt or catch things on fire. Its not for the amp so it should be sized for the wire and the amp will have its own fuse(s) internal or external. Too small a cable for your power usage/distance will drop the voltage...thats bad for an amp and limits output. Too big is just more expensive and maybe a tiny bit better if any, but good if you ever plan to upgrade later then you don't have to re-install it all.
