MAW 12/15 Dilemma

well, i am having trouble on deciding which maw to go with; 12 or 15. i am looking for LSQ. my setup is as follows:

HU: Eclipse 5423

Comps: PG RSd65CS

Amp: Kicker KX700.5 (140wx2 @ 4ohms, 400wx1 @ 2 ohms)

i am working with the trunk of a mustang so space is limited. if i went with the maw 15, which i was planning on, it would have to go in a sealed enclosure with the sub facing upwards towards the rear deck (no rear fill, deadened) - which i read was not a great idea. if i went with the maw 12 i have room to go ported, but obviously loose cone area. i dont have any experience with either sub, so i figured you guys are the ones to help me out. it just seems that for nearly the same price the 15 is the obvious choice. any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'd do the 15 sealed, but mostly since I'd do sealed either way. Realistically you should let your car choose for you. The box you have to compromise the most on is the one you shouldn't use. Do a better job of measuring exactly and let the space determine the driver.

Well that's the thing. I don't have a lot of space to work with, and maybe what i want to know is if I do the 15 I would have to fire it up, rather than the back, so I guess I am looking for a little reassurance that up-firing in a trunk is ok. Could I provide any measurements that would make this decision easier?

Only the external measurements of what your box size would be. Actually internal volume would be even better.

The box must go through an opening that measures 30"x14". So, a box that measures 30" width x 14" height x 16-23" depth would fit. I have the space for the recommended 2.2 ft^3, but I am unsure of the pros/cons of having the woofer fire upwards in a trunk. Space between the woofer and the rear deck would be around 3-5 inches, and 7 inches between the magnet and the bottom of the box.

It's a Mustang, it's going to rattle. The question is whether or not you can get it to your acceptable level. I had trouble with the rear deck of my '02 rattling against the back glass. It was an easy fix, but it took me forever to actually find the rattle itself. Also, if you don't mind a bit of work, you can squeak a bit more airspace by extending the box over the shock mounts. I had Phil at Woodlawn build my design (was in an apartment at the time). You can see what I mean by looking at the Elemental Design enclosure at Woodlawn- second one down. It's a good design that can be expanded to hold various configurations, and it cannot come out of the car without first removing the rear seat ;)

Airspace doesn't seem to be my issue, I was just curious about the effects of firing the sub upwards in the trunk. Could you link me to the web page you are referring to? I have never heard of "Woodlawn" and I tried to search for it in Google, but I couldn't come up with it. If rattling seems to be a big issue that cannot be resolved I will just build a slanted baffle enclosure and fire it towards the rear. Thanks for the info!

It'll be quite obvious which box, since it says 2002 Mustang. I actually still have the box, but the car's been gone for 2 years. No one local seems to want it, and I can't just throw it away, so it's full of stuffed animals in the spare bedroom :D Testing in the car showed that either up or back worked VERY well. Back rattled less, but up was sufficient for SPL and SQ. Firing forward didn't work well, even when sealed from the rear of the car. I'm not sure why. Also, up and back at the same time worked very well, with no cancellation issues if you decided to do multiple woofers. I did 4x10 sealed (2 up and 2 back)before going with the ported enclosure.
