Going Active...

Well I ask this question on another forum and I guess to must be too tough or too stupid to answer.

I can not find any info relating to this. I am about to include a AudioControl DQXS into my system.

I will be running my front stage (MB Quarts QSD 216) active off a Sundown Audio 100.4 amp.

I'm new to running "Active" so here's what I don't completely understand...

Gain Settings.

I have read and understand the input/output level setting procedures for the DQXS.

What about the gain settings on the amp? Quote from the manual....

"Now adjust the output level control until the "2 volt" or "5 volt" light starts to flicker.

You will want the output voltage to match up to your amplifier

2 volt means higher gain setting that 5 volt.

the sax 100.4 has an active crossover built in which allows you to cross a 2-way front stage

just by looking at the pics on the website, i think you can defeat the crossovers of the amp

look at the 2 switches, both labeled "HPF, FULL, LPF".

Running that set active, I would set the gains on the mids and then starting at the minimum on the tweeter channel turn it up to blend. As for what to do with the amps crossovers & passives, completely bypass both as they won't be needed.

M you are right. Bypass the xovr's on the amp since you will be using a external xovr.

Why not use the 100.4 to run them active since it has the ability to BP the mids?

Thanks guys. I kind of figured the gain settings on the amp would be the same routine.

When you say bypass the amp xovers...would you just set them on Full as to not interfere with the active settings?

Most definitely...and keep them there. Every time you change the slope you are also changing the phase. Considering the power of the offboard processor you won't need and shouldn't use the ones on the amplifier. Sometimes less is more; however, there is really never any need to up slopes by stacking crossovers and typically everyone that does that has some other major install woe they are trying to cover up. In fact, I typically prefer the shallowest slope I can get away without causing anomalies in the response. For safety reasons I usually start with steeper slopes and turn them down.
