4 18" BTL Build

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I've been doing a little at a time for a while now, and I finally have everything together (minus the electrical upgrades- but they will be on their way shortly).

I'll have to post some pics of all the equipment together in later post since I don't have it all in the same area, but heres my plans:

4 18" BTLs, 4 Memphis 4kws, and the electrical system to boot, most likely 3-4 iraggi 260s, and 6 batteries.

20ft net with interchangable ports, the main one will be tuned to 36hz (more like 36.1, but oh well) with about 240sq of port.

I've been waiting to get enough pics to really start this thread, so here's my progress as of now. I'll update as progress is made, but I'd like to have everything in by this weekend.

My cheap table saw, it needs a new blade but I'll say it works great for the money, and you can haul it around pretty easy.

418s_box_2.jpg

Cutting out some notches to try and get a bit more space around the equipment- not the best shot but that was cut free-hand with a jigsaw :D

418s_box_3.jpg

Like I said, for the money you can't ask for better cuts from a table saw.

418s_box_4.jpg

Putting the back together.

418s_box_5.jpg

418s_box_5.jpg

Just glue and nails, a few screws will be added in but when working with pieces this big it really gives you a 3rd hand if you have to work by yourself.

I bought this circle guide from lows for around $40 to go with my old porter cable router. I'm pretty excited to use this, I simply didn't want to order a jasper jig offline, and this allows for some HUGE circles.

I'll probably be doing that this evening or tomarrow, more pics later.

Okay, so I didn't much done with working on the wall for our laundry room:

418s_box_12.jpg

418s_box_13.jpg

418s_box_14.jpg

Putting the edges on for the removable port. I've looked at several ways of doing it, and because of the limited space in the box, I have to be able to adjust the area in order to tune lower so that I don't loose too much space

418s_box_15.jpg

418s_box_16.jpg

So my verdict with the circle thing-- didn't work that great. I had a spiral downcut bit that broke that soon into a trial cut. I had an old piece of mdf laying around and tested it out on that. About 1/4 of the way through the circle that's what happened. I think I need to try multiple times around the circle instead of one. I'm sure it was my fault. Since they're STILL working on my car (it needed a new gas float or something) I have to go to lowes tomarrow.

418s_box_17.jpg

Thin strips I'm putting in the corners for 45s, then putting a layer of fiberglass or two over that.

418s_box_18.jpg

Finishing up the port spot.

418s_box_19.jpg

Compared to a bottle of titebond. The final port will be 8"x30".

418s_box_20.jpg

Dry fit the port outer area.

418s_box_21.jpg

This little block will be on the bottom and top so I can counter sink the threaded rod without it being seen.

That's all for now, more tomarrow if I can, but I'm thinking I wont get more done till Thursday. Once I have the top on I'll lay down the layer or so of fiberglass, and by friday it should be dry and I can put in the bolts.

Thanks! It had to rain, it took all day for that bit of fiberglass to dry :( .

They had to drop my gas tank to replace the float, parts didn't come in, so I've been without a vehicle since tuesday. Hopefully I'll have it back by tomarrow afternoon.

I'll have the port together and cut out, rounded over and all. Then when I get the truck back I'll go to lowes to get the router bits, and some more fiberglass material. After that it's putting in some terminals (bolts) and carpet. Then the subs are in! I'll still have to make an amp rack, then a baffle to go over top of everything. At least till then I can run everything off 1 amp, even off that power it should be nice for the day or so till I get the other 3 amps in.

I met a friend of mine at a restaraunt yesterday, haven't seen him in forever. He's doing custom painting now, so I'm thinking of having him do something different with this box for me to finish it up nice, but I'm fresh out of ideas. Anyone with an opinion just let me know. If not it'll be just some grey carpet I have a few rolls of.

Gluing the port together.

418s_box_30.jpg

3/4 bevel

418s_box_32.jpg

Using a jigsaw free-hand- FTL, still turned out pretty good.

8x30

418s_box_37.jpg

Port fits great- so tight I had to use a rubber mallet to get it in. I doubt that second pic shows it, but it's very tight.

418s_box_38.jpg

Using the new circle tool- works great.

418s_box_39.jpg

That's just a scrap piece of plywood, I'm happy with it.

418s_box_40.jpg

first layer of the baffle

418s_box_41.jpg

temporarily screwed the 2nd layer to cut the holes.

418s_box_42.jpg

First hole.

418s_box_43.jpg

1/16th of an inch over, I doubt it will matter ;)

418s_box_44.jpg

the subs will be close

418s_box_46.jpg

All done but some sanding.

418s_box_47.jpg

taking things apart to assemble

418s_box_48.jpg

Lots of glue

418s_box_49.jpg

418s_box_50.jpg

Nailed, glued, screwed, and clamped.

418s_box_51.jpg

ready for the port.

418s_box_52.jpg

Edges all smoothed off.

418s_box_53.jpg

Next comes the allthread.

418s_box_54.jpg

Flat black paint in the port

418s_box_55.jpg

Drilling the holes for the threaded rod,

418s_box_56.jpg

One for the rod, one for the board to flushmount

418s_box_57.jpg

This hole bit works great- it's from a door knob install kit- I think it's 1". Just big enough to fit a socket in

418s_box_58.jpg

Socket on the nut to center the rod up.

418s_box_59.jpg

Glued, nailed, and screwed in place.

418s_box_60.jpg

There the nut/bolt is countersunk in the bottom of the box.

418s_box_61.jpg

Smooth bottom of the box.

418s_box_63.jpg

I love this wrench, it lets you fit over the longest bolts (great for seats in cars too).

418s_box_64.jpg

Screwed in tight and ready to trim the excess

418s_box_65.jpg

418s_box_66.jpg

The sawzall makes quick work of it, I love this battery powered rigid model- fairly light and works great.

418s_box_67.jpg

Very few pics because of the mess, but the it's all fiberglassed with 2-3 layers now.

418s_box_68.jpg

418s_box_69.jpg

418s_box_70.jpg

Subs and amps. They look so great together!

Beginning of the trim plate.

418s_box_72.jpg

Putting the port in place.

418s_box_73.jpg

Painted the whole interior flat black- can't even get a good pic lol.

418s_box_74.jpg

Cut outs?

418s_box_75.jpg

Okay, this 3rd layer is part amp rack, part 3rd baffle layer, flush mount for the subs and threaded rod.

418s_box_76.jpg

Everything fits great.

418s_box_77.jpg

Rounding everything over.

418s_box_80.jpg

Dropped one sub in to test fit, worked out great.

418s_box_81.jpg

All beveled.

Okay, all done. I carpeted part of it and decided just to have it painted. I'm drawing up some designs, but I need to get ahold of the friend who can do it for me. When I pull it out I'll probably add a few more pieces of rod and some more 'glass, but it's working good for now.

418s_box_82.jpg

Here it is, like I said it needs painted.

418s_box_83.jpg

I went to a pawn show where a guy asked me to stop by when I had things finished, after about 30seconds of music they pointed to where their bikes had fallen over from the bass (must not have been propped up that good).

th_DSCN0165.jpg

That's some door movement- all windows up. I don't know how well it picked up but it moves in and out a good bit.

And a few shots from the show last saturday- set a state record in beg. hardcore of 152.6

DSC00679.jpg

I'm giving each sub around 12v AC, so less than 4krms total till I get the new alternators in, Im still holding a steady 11v dc at the rear during steady 30+ second notes, so I'm happy with the score.

not too b
