Sealed space on MLI-65's

Recommended Posts

Just looking to see what the recommended sealed enclosure for a MLI-65 would be.

In your truck or in your house?

Definitely. In a house it matters if you are near or far from a wall, in a car it will be a little bit of a guess unless you measure it in situ but an educated guess is better than a random enclosure.

Whoa whoa... how would the enclosure differ if it's closer or further from the wall??? I'm not suggesting your wrong, I just want to know.

Thanks. And sorry for posting it here... not very relevant, but I'm too curious.

I also have a bunch of MLIs so I'm curious what other people are doing.

There are a couple ways to taper response of a driver one is through the crossover and the other the box design. Planning and measuring in your application will let you optimize both. Proximity to reflecting walls will cause a major difference in output and create anomalies in your response that will need to be dealt with. Part of the reason I am a big fan of active crossovers, it is just not possible for a manufacturer to release a passive that will be optimized for my installation.

So Lee, you never responded. Is this for your truck?

Yeah, it's for my truck. I've got this itch to do a new set of kicks, and I'm wanting some something cheap that I can run in a small sealed enclosure.

Inductance changes with frequency... so it is hard to spec out.

Re is as stated.

Z is the impedance.

I realize that you are not getting the answer you have asked yet, but I would have to guess and won't do that. I will recommend that you seal your kicks to your fenders and vent them for an IB sort of installation. You will lose a little power handling, but it will insure that the installation is good the first time around.

First time around? Like there wouldn't be a wild hair appear in my butt and they wouldn't get changed again? LOL... I looked at them again tonight, and I'm thinking that may be my easiest/best solution to begin with.

My MLI65's are sitting in my doors IB style, and with ~ 30db/octave of highpass starting @ 80hz, they can soak up the 120 watts RMS I have on tap very well.

I gotta post my system up here, just way too damm busy lately :(

I think the may is out of place. Unless you really want to tinker and re-do IB is the way to go with midbass drivers in a car.
