Another 'which sub' thread!

Recommended Posts

I am sure you guys get tired of answering these questions, but since I am a complete newbie when it comes to car audio, I would like some advice from experienced audio enthusiasts like yourselves.

My system is going to be more SQ based than SPL, reason is I listen to as much, if not more, rock/alternative music than rap. I was leaning towards either 1 12", 1 10", or 2 10" subs. I want something that hits accurately and enhances my rock music, but will also sound good when I decide to play rap. I like the idea of 1 10/12" right now, because I am going to get a custom box fitted for my IS300 behind the driver side wheel-well (I don't want to sacrifice trunk space right now), is this a bad spot?

I was looking at either:

1 or 2 SoundSplinter RL-i 10"

1 or 2 AA Arsenal 10" D4

1 SoundSplinter RL-p 12"

1 AA Arsenal 12" D4

Which of these would best suit my needs? I was going to power 1 10" with the Sundown SAX-100.2 or 2 10"/1 12" with the Sundown SAE-1000D, good choice? What other amps should I consider?

Thanks in advance everyone,

Gary

That is a pretty big budget fluctuation, but either way you are going to have a hard time getting much response as most people who have a Soundsplinter haven't run out and bought a new AA.

Don't underestimate the RL-i8, it's a mean little driver. My listening preferences sound very similar to yours. I've been powering my single RL-i8 with a Sundown Audio SAX-100.2 at 8 ohms, and it sounds great. It has tremendous output in a ported enclosure, although the SQ is best in a sealed box (duh).

I just picked up a SAE-1500D prototype from Sundown for the sub. If it sounds as good as I think it will, I'll be putting the SAX-100.2 up for sale.

I understand, I have just never been the type to 'save' money just to end up spending more in the long run to make myself happy - I would rather spend more up front to get the best. Well that answered my question, I would be satisfied with SoundSplinter or AA - thanks.

I used to vote more on the side of the single driver installs, but the two different 10" ideas are good choices also. I know the RL-i is a very proven driver. The Arsenal is new to market but comes from a top notch build house with a great designer behind it.
