For that kind of budget, it's stupid to only consider passive sets.

What do you place a priority on? Midrange, midbass...etc. Although with that budget you're not going to have to make a lot of compromises.

I'd say get a set of Scanspeak Revelators, and read up on Zaphaudio.com for tweets. Pretty sure you could get a pair of SS's ring radiators and still stay under budget, but I'm not sure on that.

well i have quite a bit of high frequency hearing loss , so highs are crutial , over mids

i run Type RF X162S at the moment the pair share 500 watts

You really should try to audition as many different speakers as you can - $1000 is no place to be buying things without either hearing them or having a good frame of reference.

Sounds like a pair of horn loaded compression drivers, like a set of Image Dynamics full body horns, might be a way to go...then you'd run a conventional 7" or 8" midbass driver with them. You could EQ the horns to sound however you'd want them to sound, they can get very shrill but to your ears it might be more balanced that way.

With your budget and desire I would ONLY run a DIY set. Buying anything off the shelf would be a waste.

Now the next question is what do you have for processing to do this. If the $1000 has to include a crossover and another 2chn of amplification we need to know. Also, where does deadening fit in your budget? No deadening and $10000 speakers will sound worse than the $225 drivers and deadening in my truck guaranteed. Install is really, really important.
