Recommended Posts

hi today i was playing deep bass for like 20 minutes and after i gave the sub a break i touched the fi cap and it was pretty warm is this ok?? if i had played it for a lil longer would the sub had blown up???or do i have to break in my sub???im running a rockford fosgate p8002 amp and its sopuse to put out like 950 rms only. I tought a fi could take more than that if i got all the options thanks.

i think i heard that it was ok, i know my 18 with everything but cooling gets pretty warm..

some one said it was because of the hixmax coil & 3rd slug.. i have mine running at about 3000 watts rms @ 2ohms on an XX-cyclops so its pretty clean power..

one of my friends has 2 15's with no options on 2k rms each and tthey dont even get warm so that makes a little sense when they say it is from the options you have, some one else with more knowledge needs to reply to this though..

So long as you don't smell coil burning your fine...if your getting the funky coil smell then turn it down.

hey i got the cooling option on my sub but what do they do excactly to the sub, what makes it different from one that doenst have the cooling, the only thing i notice was a lot of holes arround the sub basket is that what cooling is?? hey one more question do u think that the bigger the box lets say up to 4 cu ft for a bl15 the more bass it produces?? is a 4cuft box better than a 3cuft?

Those holes provide more ventilation and help more air circulate around the coil, keeping its temperature down.

Warm dust cap is normal, don't worry about it unless you smell something as Nick said.

Think about it this way... ever touch a 100-watt light bulb that has been on for an hour? Hot as hell right?

Well... your coil is dissipating 95-98% or more of the energy you put in as heat. Think about it :)

Heat will build up in all parts after being played for a while. If the coil doesnt smell, you should be good (means the cooling is doing its job). The cooling consists of 6 axial channels machined into both the pole and the top plate as well as an angled cut on the pole extension to aid in air flow.

I asked a similar question about my BL, got the same answer, if your not smelling coil, your good! I got my dustcap heated up playing test tones, I never smelled even a hint of coil cookage, and trust me, I have blown a couple of subs in my teenage years so I know what coil smells like :D
