Hey,

First of all let me say that i am new to this forum, and i have been doing as much reading as possible. This Forum is soooooooo helpful, props to whoevers in charge.

My first subs that i owned were Rockford Fosgate p2's, i had them running with a Rockford Fosgate amp as well. I made the huge mistake like everyone else, and i decided to go through best buy about 2 years ago to get my subs etc.... Dont get me wrong, they have nice stuff, its decent, but not what im looking for right now. I have a 2004 Extended cab silverado, and i want to put two 12's under the back bench seat ( if possible ). If not, i might have to work with something else. I have heard a lot of MTX's in a couple of my friends cars, and i was just wondering what people have to say about MTX, and if anyone could reccomend some good 12'" MTX subs. I want really good subs, nothing too crazy, but something that will be heard from far away and that hits hard. If MTX isnt the way to go, what would you reccomend for a truck?

So its simple, i need two 12" subs, preferbally MTX Thunders, and one really good amp, that has enough power to take care of my subs, and eventually speakers etc... Total all in all im looking to spend between $650-$875... Obviously i am going to get a DVD unit, or a head unit, so betweet that and a custom box, im expecting to spend around GIVE or TAKE $1,300.... LIKE I SAID BEFORE, I DONT WANT ANYTHING TOO TOO CRAZY, BUT I WANT SOMETHING THAT WILL KILL ANYTHING THAT BEST BUY OR CIRCUIT CITY HAS TO OFFER...

Please feel free to drop your two cents!!! i need as much advice as possible!

Why MTX?

you say you've been doing a lot of reading.. but you still think you need to spend that much on a "custom box"?

You probably should do a little more reading before you go to some local shop and they bend you over the counter with their pricing.

If you're looking for a good base system. Look into Ascendant Audio or Mach5 for subs. For amps, there are a few Rf amps on sale in the shop currently.

I would suggest talking to mrray13 or tireryr, both moderators on here. They both do excellent custom box work and I am sure they would be cheaper then a shop. Oh and thanks for the compliments on the forum. :)

And for your budget, you could really upgrade to something nicer than MTX.

I wouldn't recommend anything from MTX anymore I lost all respect for MTX subs after the 8000s that I had kept failing on me. Their amps are nice and put out good power but they are over priced now. I would try anything from a company on this forum before MTX.

So im not hearing too many good things about MTX... but thats ok because i didnt have my heart set on them. My box is not going to be cheap due to the size... it will hopefully house 2 12" subs... but i want the subs under my rear bench seat. Again, i have a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado (Ext cab) Which has a rear one piece bench seat... i have no idea which way would be more beneficial as far as sound quality goes.... to have them face upwards towards the seat, or outwards facing the driver, and passenger seats. Can someone give me a rough ballpark of what it would cost to get a box built for two 12's, and cover it in a plain or designed material?

As far as the Subs, Can anyone give me some names and series of what you would reccomend for my ideal setup. Im hoping to get away with only using one Amp... im going to get aftermarket speakers as well, but im not worried about that right now. Between Two Subs and some good speakers, what will i need as far as Amps? If their are any good sites for me to view these products that you reccomend please let me know...

Thanks for any advice

Talk to mrray13, I believe he has the same truck as you and has built a handful of boxes for other people with similar trucks. He will not rip you off.

Thanks, im sure your going to laugh when i ask this question...

But how can i go about contacting this mysterious mrray13?

Also, if i were to go to a car audio shop, what should i expect to pay for a "custom box" for Two 12's (for a truck)?

Thanks man

MTX has dissapointed the hell out of me, I used to swear by them back in the day. I used to LOVE the old Blue Thunders, and even the Terminators, but all there new stuff is way overpriced. Although I had a pair of the 8500's and the were good, but I got them cheap. I'm with the rest of the guys on this one. There are tons of brands that are cheaper, more rliable and will outperform MTX... unless you can afford the almighty 22" JACKHAMMER.. J/K :) hundreds of pounds of garbage.....

I'm all for getting stuff cheap, but I'm sick of seeing people bash mainstream stuff because it's mainstream. That's the REAL reason. If we could get W7s, 9500s, and the like for AA, FI, SS, etc. prices, you wouldn't hear one bad thing about them.

MTX got their name for a reason. Yes, they have some creative marketing that makes others look at them in a different light, but they make GREAT products. I'd NEVER hesitate to buy anything they make. NEVER had a problem with any of their products either aside from the countless blown Thunder 6000s I went through, but that was user error and I know it. BUT, they took back every driver I brought in with a fried coil, no questions asked.

Their amps are bulletproof, save for the lower lines, and they really know their drivers. Their enclosure specs are always Spot-on.

Shopping wisely, you can find them quite a bit cheaper than retail as well. Don't be so quick to change your mind just from what others say, but also, don't be so quick to jump on something because everyone says so.

If you want to go with MTX, go with MTX. Is there better available cheaper, ALWAYS, but if it's not what you really want, then what's the point?

i'm here, i'm here!!

oh, and he pm'd me too, lol.

and i honestly agree with tirefryr, i've never had an issue with mtx. sub wise i'd stay at the 7500 series or higher. and i miss their old 1501d. that was a pretty good bruiser.

otherwise, look into the ssa icon, the maw12 (depending upon power), teh sundown line up of amps. not too mention soundsplinter's rl-p and the Fi lineup. there is so much good shit here, lol, it's hard to name it all.

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

MrRay13 built my box for my truck and I'm more than pleased with it. He built two of the exact same boxes and kept one for himself and we're both very happy with the results.

here's some pics so you have an idea of the craftsmanship involved

I need to get a pic of it with the rear seat installed, but I never think about it...

and everything you see in that first picture was less than $1000 total

you won't regret getting a custom box as opposed to a pre-made box (probox, subthump, etc...)

I Think i might go with Two 12" MTX Thunder 7500's...With Dual Voice Coils OR

I Might go with the Mach 5 Maw12... im just not sure...

Im getting aftermarket speakers and hopefully tweeters.... Soooo would it be smarter to get a seperate Amp for speakers and tweeters? or can i just get one Amp with enough power for the subs... And then some ( For the speakers and tweeters).

You are right people do bash mainstream just because its mainstream but all I was saying is that I had bad experience with their 8000s (the tinsel leads broke twice once under warranty then on the refurbs that they sent me) that it turned me off of their subs. I loved the 5000s that I had but broke them from user error. Heck I still am running a 801D at 1 ohm their amps are strong.

Silverado23 If you want MTX go with it they do have good products and I have heard that the new lines 7500 8500 9500 are big improvements over the older 6000s & 8000s and shouldn't have the problems they once had I just had a bad experience with the old lines.

I would go with two seperate amps one for speakers and one for subs.

Ok... I have Decided FINALLY. Im going with Two 12" MTX Thunder 8500's. (500rms,1000peak).

Hopefully my man mrray13 will be able to hook me up with a nice box for my truck!! BTW... You are hard to get a hold of.

So my last concern is my Amp(s). I want a really good Amp that can handel my 8500's, and then something smaller for my speakers but im not even sure what ill need because i have like 6 speakers in my truck, four up front, and two in the back (i think). so it cant be some baby amp, its going to have to be "semi-serious". Any suggestions, fell free to drop your 2 cents...
