Changing my Sonoma's Setup

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about changing my sub setup in my regular cab sonoma for a couple of months now. Currently I'm running 2 RE10s in a sealed box each powered off of one channel of a Hifonics zx4000. I've been throwing around the idea of putting 4 of the Tang Band 6.5s in there to gain some space back for me to be more comfortable, but I think I'd rather go with something much louder. Originally, I had an AA Atlas 12 behind my passenger seat, and I really liked the sound of it, but with its 6.5" mounting depth, the box i made for it made my passenger very uncomfortable. Like an idiot, i sold the Atlas and went to the RE10s. Well I'm wanting to get something similar to the output of the Atlas back and I don't really care too much about making my passengers uncomfortable anymore so mounting depth isn't a main concern.

Basically what I'm looking for is a single 10" or 12" sub that I can put in a relatively smaller box behind the passenger seat in my truck. I'd like something that was as solid as my Atlas. Price is a little concern. I want something under $250 and preferably under $200. I'll be powering it off the Hifonics ZX4000 for now, until I can afford to upgrade my amp. So 4 ohm SVC or 2 ohm DVC would work the best for now. Any suggestions?

i'm not at all famaliar with that amp. what's it's rating at 4 ohm?

but to throw a suggestion out there, look into kicker's new cvt lineup. at 4 5/16" of an inch deep, 400wrms power handling and a MAP price of $179, you could get a 12". or a pair. and they come in either svc 4 or svc2.

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

that amp bridged puts out 400 wrms at 4 ohms. . .

nice suggestion for the kicker. . .i hadn't really even thought about them. . .i'm not a huge fan of the cvr and some of their beefier subs are out of my intended price range . . . i wasn't really even aware of that particular line before

don't overlook the sundown sd-1's either. They are some pretty efficient, bad-ass little woofers.

they don't lookbad at all. . . my only problem with that sub is its 8 ohm coil . . . right now with my current amp, it would work to run a pair of them, but i'm looking at going to a single 10 or 12. . .i plan on upgrading amps in the future and using my hifonics for my door speakers. . . i would like to make more effiencient use of my available power

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the SoundSplinter RL-i series.

thats fine, just run the amp at 8 ohms. the SD-1 is rated at 200w, and the amp will run cooler and more efficiently.

thanks for the ideas so far guys. . . can anyone else chime in with an idea or 2?

i'd especially like recommendations from people who heard the subs that they are suggesting. . .

well, one of my RE10s took a crap on me and the cone seperated from the surround. . .2 years of mild abuse is finally taking its toll. . .i'm going to inspect the other one today and if it isn't too bad, i'll epoxy the cone to the surround for now. . .but it looks like i'm going to build a somewhat small ported enclosure for 2 tang band 6.5"s that i have lying around the house right now and run each of them at 4 ohms to a channel on my hifonics amp for now. . . however i'm still looking for as many options on a 10 or 12 inch sub for the truck as you guys can give me. . .i figured with all the subs you guys seem to try out, i thought there might be some more suggestions for my intended purpose. . . thanks so far guys. . .

by the way, i was looking for recommended ported enclosure sizes for the tang bands and i can't seem to find it anywhere. . .does anyone know what they might be?

Arsenal or Fi SSD?

i'm looking into the new arsenal right now, and at that price i think its a hell of a deal. . . i'm just wondering how they might compare to the old Atlas. . .i really liked the sound of that sub. . .i guess you would say i'm more into SQ but I do like to get a little louder than the Atlas used to . . .the Q is at the top end of my budget, but is it more SQ oriented than the SSD? . . . most of the talk I'm hearing about Fi's broducts seems to focus on the BL and the BTL. . .

The Fi SSD with copper coil would be a good SQ option.
