so i noticed a lot of you on here are very well educated when it comes to systems in cars (ie doing it yourself). where/how did ya'll learn all this stuff? was it just trial and error pretty much? reason i ask cause i really would like to learn and dont have enough time to go to a school for it. read two "eh" books but want tons more info and want to learn more.

research by forums, and online "papers". also talking to some people, and a little trial and error to top it off. if you like DIY stuff, go to www.diymobileaudio.com

chit i am no expert but i learned a heck of a lot by just asking questions to the right people.... Scott, nick (super helpful and patient), Jimj, Jacob, ///M5, Devildriver, MMray, aaron, mark, etc etc (I know i missed a chit load more)...

I just read everything these guys put in the forums, then i ask more questions, read, bug them, hound them, stalk them... chit ask ///M5, MMray and JimJ I just pm them a bunch of questions on a host of different things, hell i even ask questions when it doesn't pertain to me or my system at that point in time..... then go and try what you find out in your system... Gains, gauge wire, DMM tricks, enclosure tricks man I try them all (i like the hands on learning though, I hate books and i enjoy reading other peoples knowledge "hands-on" knowledge of the stuff)...

Yeah, that is my current problem. I keep reading books and feel like i have learned very little. i need to try and find a hands on approach. maybe undo my system and try to re-install it. Take little steps here and there until I learn more I guess.

Nothing beats hands on experience. A really good experience for learning about sub enclosures would be to take the same sub and build 4 or more different enclosures for it and compare. It will allow you to take what you read on paper and convert it into real world experience which cannot be replaced by reading. There are a lot of well rounded members on this board though and you can probably tell who they are from reading their responses. I would guess all of them, myself included are still learning everyday. The big key is to want to learn and do everything you can to promote that. Don't expect it to come fast though.

Yeah, i need to start learning before i get my truck, i wanna build that enclosure myself. but i know i will need help from someone for that one cause it will probably have to built inside the truck. i want a wall to house, probably 4 18" btl's. I am lookng at either building one huge wall porting all 4 together. My other option was building two setups and stackin them. Use some nice bolt clamps and clamp the two boxes together. got a lot to plan out though. still have to get the truck, lol. that is next year, gotta pay for my wedding first. shawn also invited me down to his area to help me out as well, so if time permits i will be going down there to learn as much as possible.

just having the "wnat" is a good first step. here's a few quick tidbits..

don't be afraid to fail. if it doesn't work, try again. learn from it and try again. (i was going to quote edison and his lightbulb statment, but it failed me, lol)

don't be afraid to ask questions. that's why we are here.

don't be afraid of constructive critism. we only get harsh if you fail to respond, lol. most of us have been there and tried that. so when we say that way sucks, it's not to cut you down personally. it's just that one of us has probably tried it and it just didn't work.

and never think you know it all. it just doesn't happen. most of the really smart ones around here are always learning. and aren't afraid of someone teaching them.

and like ///M5 said, nothing can replace hands on. take shawn up on his offer. watch and learn, get your hands dirty. it's addicting though, lol...so be careful!!

wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee :slayer:

When it comes to installing, the only way you can learn is to install.

Theoretical knowledge is easily acquired from reading books and hanging out on forums.
