Amp getting hot hot hot!
Frostedflakejake replied to Beandip's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Good luck with the heating issue I can also reccomend a Sundown Amplifier to you. Mine is in location with very little airflow and it never even gets warm. Ever. Good luck!! -
I've seen lots of people on here saying "if that damn harley can go screaming down the street then i should be able to crank my system" Well i've put 1,000 miles on one of those harleys. Vance and Hines pipes with no baffling. Guess what? I got a ticket for being too loud. Guess where it was? A freaking ramp onto the freeway. But no noise citations yet for the explorer. I don't really understand how people can keep it cranked up when pedestrians, homes, or other cars are around. I just feel... embarassed. Exception being the freeway. I'll bump when i'm there.

Okay, well just so you know for future reference: 1. Unless you have an oscillioscope, don't use bass-boost. Never. Not on the Amp, Not on the Head Unit 2. Set your gain using a DMM if you aren't able to do it by hear (i'm not able to do it by hear, follow this guide Setting Amp Gain) And on the subwoofer side of things, i can reccomend a BTL. But that's not saying much; it's the only heavy duty sub i've had. Hopefully you can get someone who's had experience with multiple high-end woofers to comment. As i try to only talk about the things i know best I also only hear good things about the xcon!

RE box calculator tunes too high?
Frostedflakejake replied to Frostedflakejake's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
Bromo, i know this may be sad, but i don't fully understand what you're saying about using the square port to do the slot port. Would you mind explaining that so a 10 year old, or me, would understand? I would greatly appreciate it!! -
Well if you're looking as loud as possible...xcon is a good idea. Fi BTL is a good idea. Hell, there are lots of good ideas. But mainly i'm posting asking how exactly you blew the type r's. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but aren't they rated at 600 watts a piece? Thus being said, it's a large possibility that the blowing up of the subs was user error. Now i'm only saying this because i don't want you to go and drop $500 on a brand new woofer only to blow it up again. What were the settings on the amp and the HU? How did you set the gain on the amp? If it is user error, nothing is more frustrating than destroying brand new expensive equipment. Believe me, i've been there.

Alpine Head Units
Frostedflakejake replied to BanginGMC's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Sorry, I can't really give you any input on any of those head units. But i most certainly did check out the new shallow mount type R's!! They seem like a killer idea!! But... that price, even as a MSRP, is ridiculous!! Well, at least i think so. Good luck with the future set-up! -
Yes to Lancelot. What is your budget? That will help us guide you with what line of products to go with. I mean, my BTL setup cost around $2000 and i could have easily spent more. Hell, i probably need to spend more. Are you prepared to drop that amount of money on this project?

Pictures of my just purchased icon!

Thanks mark!!! -
So i just purchased a 1st generation 15" icon from Big E! (great guy) And i've decided to take some pictures and post 'em up here! I had to take the pictures anyways since i have to send them to the real owner of the sub. I decided that there might be a few guys up here who would appreciate seeing them as well! It's also kind of a part 2 for my review on Big E as a seller. I tried to capture the very minimal inperfections.

I was hoping i could get this question answered without starting a new thread, What are the specs on this thing? I'm designing and building the box for my friend (god i'm a nice guy) and obviously that information would be nice. ha. As for now, i'll start with the current specs. thanks! -
If your amp has a subsonic filter it should be fine and dandy. But i've never seen the amp and my experience is limited. As far as i know, on every other amp i've ever read about, used, or seen on here on the forums; the onboard subsonic filter was fine for keeping those too low notes out.

Ha, it's funny that you mentioned that. During the sale me and Big E talked about our car audio experience and one of the things he mentioned was how UGLY he thinks the new SSA dustcaps are! haha -
Now i'm not the most knowledgable person here by anymeans, but i'm pretty sure you don't really have a whole lot of control here with the low frequence problem. As a matter of fact, the only way to conrol the frequencies sent to your speakers are filters. So if you tune around 32hz like me and tons of people, that means something like 25 hz could potentially hurt your speaker. Now do you know what 25 hz sounds like off the top of your head? quite personally i don't. But even if you did, does that mean that when that "low" note hits, your gonna crank your volume down and then crank it back up when it's gone? I mean, if you really knew how to take care of a speaker, you would understand the need for a correctly set subsonic filter. I just wouldn't want you back up here posting about how you need a re-cone kit. Nothing sucks more than broken equipment.

Bought a first generation 15" icon from big E last week. Everything went perfectly!! he agreed to hold the sub untill i was ready to pick it up which was fantastic! All in all he was a fantastic guy and fantastic seller! Everything was exactly as he said it was and he gave me a little demo too! he pretty much did everything that a good seller should do. I showed up earlier than expcted and it didn't seem to bother him at all. I would have 100% confidence in buying any thing from him in the future! And i would reccomend anyone to buy from him!! A very nice stand-up guy! Thanks BIG-E!

Alpine or Pioneer? Cant Decide...
Frostedflakejake replied to slim142's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
I bought my alpine 9886 about 6 months ago and i couldn't be happier. I happen to find the quality of the product and the quality of the sound top-notch. Everything seems solid and not cheap. sound is noticeably clearer even with the stock speakers in. Hell, my stock radio didn't even produce some of the noises and instruments in songs that the Alpine now plays clearly. The bio-lite display really does produce about a 90% no glare surface which is fantastic when the sun's out. Ipod connectivity is awesome, just make sure to check the specs to make sure its compatible with yours (it won't charge my girls nano). Menu's are easy to navigate. I happen to think it looks pretty good as well. All in all, i would recommend it to anyone who is considering it. I've been happy about it since day one! hope that helps! -
Amp selection
Frostedflakejake replied to splxtreme's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Well i'm guessing you're looking for a single channel amp around 1200 watts? then i would go with this one Refurb Sundown SAE-1200dv2 http://www.db-r.com/sell/store2/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=65_67_69_105 i can't speak for sundown service by Jacob since i've never actually purchased a sundown item from him. However, i have purchased from Chris over at db-r! And i can say that his customer service is also top notch. He fixed my amplifier under warranty even though it was COMPLETELY my ignorant fault which isn't covered under his 1 year warranty. A very nice guy who sells very nice products and knows exactly what he's doing. What else could you ask for? -
It was his review of the BTL's that influenced me to purchase my own!
