5k Amp?
Frostedflakejake replied to Drmmr4life's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
How about the Stetsom V 5k2 E? You're definitely going to need those batteries. -
I agree. Clearly too young to know how to make an exquisite sandwich.

4 vvx10's need power....Decisions, decisions...

Are you planning on running them at 0.5 or 2 ohms? -
Stefan, Do you still have downloadable access to a copy of Matlab? Access that you could perhaps, share?

Sean, it makes so much sense to learn that you are a Physicist

I would shit my pants if I found that on my trash can.

FrostedFlakeJake's Picture a Day
Frostedflakejake replied to Frostedflakejake's topic in Photography
Would anyone like to see a boat powered by 4 supercharged v-12's which got the world speed record in 1932? It only produces 8,000 hp...... no big deal..... -

i have alot more pictures of vehicles if anyone is interested. I am in the motor-city afterall -
Probably due to your 32hz tuning I would suspect that as well. Not really tuning it, but I believe that is an ideal ratio to try to keep in mind. It's 9:1 I think, but I can't remember what sides of the box it refers to, so that really doesn't help you at all....

okay tell me what net cubic feet you want
-
Taking the subs combined .34 cubic feet of displacement and the ports 1.069 cubic feet of displacement into consideration, that box would be about 6 net cubic feet. That's also on the small end of port area. I wouldn't put any more power on them because you won't be able to notice the increase in power unless its extremely significant (1,000 watts or so) and also I wouldn't take his opinion on "skar subs kill the lowlows" too much to heart. That being said, I have no idea what your goal is for your box. But I can throw you out one that i would make which fits my goals ( won't necessarily help you but it would sure make me look candid). 19 tall by 40 wide by 24 deep would be external dimensions. I would make a slot port. So it's height would be 16.5 inches and i would make it 6 inches wide for a total of 99 square inches of port area giving you roughly 16 square inches of port area per cubic feet. This L-shaped slot port would be 30 inches in total length and it would maintain it's 6 inch width throughout the L. Net volume = 6.14 feet. Tuning frequency is 33.71hz. It would work for me.

18-55mm is, in my opinion, an appropriate range of focal lengths for general use. I suggest you try out some lenses and it seems like you have access to them. And naturally, Sean is right. Finding glass for that Sony might be difficult. I don't know what mount they have on there... They make adapter rings but I have never used one so I couldn't tell you if they are fidgety in any way or if they lessen picture quality in any way. Try to find some local photo shops when you look around for lenses. Inspect the lens for obvious things like scratches, mold, dents. Make sure everything works smoothly but isn't excessively loose. Ask them if you can test it on one of their cameras. I even take my laptop with me so i can view fullsize test shots to make sure nothing funky is going on. It can be a great wallet saver. A few weeks ago I saved about $250 by buying a "used" lens that was impeccable! I would recommend getting your hands on any DSLR and a generic cheap zoom lens combo for a few weeks. Rent one, borrow one, whatever. You need to spend more time shooting a larger array of scenes than testing in a store can provide in order for you to really know what lens you need. Pay attention to the focal length and apertures you use the most, or wish you could be using. That way, when you go spend the big bucks and get a great lens you know it's the one you will get the most out of. As a heads up, you will almost always be wanting a lower lowest aperture. For example, I shoot mostly landscape imaging. I have four lenses but for 90% of my shots I use my same 10-22mm ultra wide. Now if I wanted to shoot just about anything else, that lens would be out of place. But for me, what I shoot, and my budget, that lens is perfect.
-
The main investment is lenses. But I suspect Neal is looking for a good general purpose set-up (hence all my talk about a good general purpose lens). You also have to face the fact that you probably will never have a zoom that zoom's as much as a $200 digital camera. But if you get hooked, you will end up paying more for a lens then you did your camera.... several times...
-
Well I take that back now, slightly. I see my lens is actually a 70-300mm. I still think 55mm isn't quite wide enough for general purpose shooting. However you might be able to get away with it... but there is a reason, and it's a good one, that general purpose lenses are generally from 25-80mm. I suppose it would depend on your shooting habits.
-
meh. Cheap glass is cheap glass. Haven't used their new stuff, but their old stuff really was sub-par in my opinion. I would say that 55mm isn't wide enough for a good all purpose lens. I would try to get closer to 30mm. I have a cheap 55-300mm (Sigma) and I can tell you that the 55mm is simply not wide enough for me to keep it on the camera. I only use it for macro or zoom shots. I strongly advise getting another lens to accompany that telephoto.

^highly recommend this if you have the money that's what I did.

I know it's not one of the models listed, but Shogen has an a580. Might be worth asking him

My 13yr old and friends. Must see. Funny.

Agreed. I know I did my fair share at that age -
Yup! You've reached the reason why so many people use slot ports
-
You definitely need more port area. But lengthening the ports won't give you more port area. You need bigger ports. Like 6"
-
Make sure you use appropriate filters if you do! Don't want to burn out your lens!

connecting lugs to power wire
Frostedflakejake replied to Briggiboy33's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Solders contain a chemical that cleanses the surface that the solder is applied to. Plumbers solder uses an acid that will eventually destroy/weaken your wire. Electrical solder obviously does not use this acid. The smart move is to cut off the connection plus an inch or so of wire (the solder has been sucked into the wire a little bit if you soldered correctly) and then resolder with electrical solder. -
Happy Birfday friend!
