I had two 12" SSDs on a 2600-watt Hifonics brutus amp (obviously getting less than rated wattage, also voltage dropped a lot) and I blew one. After reconing that sub, my other sub literally set fire because it got so hot. So definitely be careful with your gain setting.

I envy Brian for being able to figure that out Thank you!

As I stated in another topic, I burnt one of the voice coils in one of my 12" SSDs. One of the voice coils is still fine. I was just wondering...until I get the recone kit in the mail, is there any way to wire up my amp to just one of the voice coils? The reason I thought about this is I did the AA battery test (hooking up the + and - to the sub to hear the pop) and since that made noise, I was thinking maybe it could run off one voice coil. If that is possible, would it be bad to have one sub like that and one sub wired normally? Technically wouldn't it just be 1.5 ohms? My amp is 1 ohm stable. Thanks a bunch, Mike

Let me see if I can explain the wiring. On the working sub, I have my amp going to the positive of one voice coil, and the negative of the other coil. Then, I have a wire going from the remaining negative of the first coil to the positive of the other coil. On the other sub, I just have it wired to the positive and negative of the working coil. DeepSubBoy, they're dual 1-ohm copper coil.

Is it on it's own channel? It's a mono amp. So no. The amp has two positives and negatives, but they're connected inside into one channel. What exactly do you mean? Like I had my head unit settings too high, not the amp?

Sorry for the double post, but just thought I'd say that I just put it in and hooked it up to the single coil. It's working great. One thing though...the sub that is running on one coil seems to be doing more work. Like, there's more excursion. Is that normal? On a side note, I finally installed the dynamat trunk kit I got from my parents for Christmas. What a difference

If you burned one coil, I would check into to see what I did wrong to burn a coil or otherwise you will burn that second coil also. I'm overpowering them a bit. They're on a Hifonics BXi-2608D at 1-ohm. Since Hifonics overrates their amps I'm probably getting around 2000 watts RMS. I tend to crank them a little higher than I should for longer than I should haha. But I learned my lesson blowing that coil. I have a recone kit coming in the mail so no biggie if I do burn the second coil technically. But no reason to be reckless EDIT: Thanks for the help again Duran! I owe you yet again

Personally, I think they're great amps for the money. I don't see why their reputation is so bad. I have a Hifonics BXi-2608D that I got for like $270 used(shipped) and slapped a new warranty on it from my local car audio store. Been pushing my SSDs pretty dang hard. Not everyone can afford Sundown.

Hey everybody, I have two 12" Fi SSD Dual 1-ohm subs(copper coil option only) in a ported enclosure being pushed by a Hifonics Bxi-2608D. Last week, one of the subs completely stopped working. No noise at all. I took both of the subwoofers out and tried swapping them to the other sides. Still, the same subwoofer doesn't work when wired to the other subs wiring. So that tells me that it's a problem with the sub itself, not the amp. When I push in on the sub, there is no grinding or anything of the sort. It's identical to the working subwoofer. Everything looks fine physically. So I tried hooking it up to a multimeter. One of the voice coils reads 1.1ohms, the other gives me nothing. On the working sub, both give me 1.1. I also tried the AA battery test. One coil gives me a pop, the other doesn't. I'm guessing one of my voice coils is blown. What do you all think? And if one of them is blown, what do I do? Do I HAVE to send it to Fi, or could I take it to my local car audio shop(they actually know their stuff, unlike some places haha). Thanks so much. Any help is appreciated.

Amazing! They knock really hard. And they actually sound nice. I tuned my box pretty low so rap sounds the best. But I love the setup.

With my stock alternator/battery, I'm definitely not getting nearly the full 2600 watts. But I do need to take better care of my babies. I'm ordering the recone now...but I don't see chrome blue as a dustcap option, which is what I have now. Is that not available for recone kits? I can e-mail you about it if that's what you would prefer, by the way. Also, what is the basket option for?
-
Ahh for real? That sucks. Thanks for saving me a bunch of money, I was about to order it.

Test tone. 35Hz. I tuned my system low since I didn't plan on competing and it sounds sick tuned nice and low I ran a 150 amp fuse. The car could be on, too. For the amateur street classes, you have to have the car off and play music. Street class(what I competed in) and above, you can do test tone and car on.

Found it... http://mecacaraudio.com/pointsstandings.aspx Go to 2009, Street 3. 24th from the top, Mike Cummings. 142.5 =]
-
Yup it was a Meca competition. You mean 2009? Haha. It might have been a 142.3. It was on Sunday, September 20th. I forget which division it was. It was the Tennessee state finals in White House, TN I believe.

With dual voice coil subwoofers one VC is wound on top of the other, so when you buy a recone, it is technically two voice coils. There is a chance you will notice a change in sound between the copper coil and flatwound aluminum coil, if you notice a sound and don't like, or the copper coil ends up failing, you can order another recone. Awesome, thanks a ton. In the end this will probably prove to be a good thing since the flatwound coil will help me be able to peak a bit more. Am I right in assuming my decibel score will go up a little with both subwoofers reconed with the flatwound? Got my 2nd competition on January 16th...won my first one in my division with a 142.5db
-
Okay...so one recone kit covers both voice coils in the sub? And having one sub with a copper coil and one with a flatwind coil won't sound weird? Like having two different subs? Haha. Thanks again, you're a huge help.
-
Thanks for the quick reply Duran. On the Fi website, they have an SSD recone kit available for $65. I can just order one of those then and get the flatwind coil? This is probably a dumb question, but if I were to change my other sub to a flatwind coil as well, would I have to order two since there are two voice coils?

1 cuft each will be fine. Fi recommends .8 - 1.6 cuft for sealed, so anything in that range will work great. You'll love the SSDs. Even underpowered, they sound great. I have two 12" SSDs and I couldn't be happier.

Hi all. I've been lurking on these forums for a while doing as much research as possible, but I still have a few questions. Let's start with some info... I currently have two mtx jackhammer jh55 12's in an mtx ported box (about 4.8 cubic feet). They're being pushed by an mtx 600xd...600 watts at 2ohms. So each sub is getting 300 watts. They're in the back of my Toyota FJ Cruiser. It was my first setup that I got about a year ago. So anyway, I'm looking to upgrade. I'm selling my subs and amp on Monday...luckily getting $400 for them I'm on a tight budget(18 year old about to go to college haha) but I really want some nice Fi subs to bump in my FJ =D Originally, I was thinking of getting one 15" BL and putting it in a ported box about 4 cubic feet or so. Size isn't a problem seeing as I have a big trunk area in my FJ. I'd be running it off of a Hifonics BXi-1606D at 1-ohm. I know I should really get a sundown, but I really can't afford it. I can get the Hifonics for $200 so I'm going to have to stick with that amp unless I find an equivalent for the same money. My other option that I'm thinking is getting two 12" SSDs and putting them in a ported box about 4 cubic feet or so. I'd also be running these off the Hifonics BXi-1606D. I'm basically asking which you think would be best for the money. I'm looking primarily for SPL. I guess I'm a little afraid that my new setup will end up not being as loud as the MTX 12s. Which will be louder? Will either be louder than the MTX's? I'm open to suggestions. Also, stock electrical. The new Toyota's have pretty decent alternators by what I've heard, and I really can't afford a new one or the big 3. I have 4-gauge wiring now, but open to upgrading to 0/1 gauge if necessary. Thanks so much! Sorry for the incredibly long post. But the more info, the better, eh?

Help wiring from amp to subs
M1K3 replied to M1K3's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Hifonics includes extra terminals on their amps, but they all connect together inside so just wire them the first + and - to one sub and the second + and - to the other sub Thank you! Man, you guys are the best. I love this forum. -
Help wiring from amp to subs
M1K3 posted a topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Hey everyone, I have two 12" Fi SSD's on their way...I ordered 1-ohm DVC so I could wire them to 1-ohm with my amp. I found a diagram of how to wire them, but I have a problem. I made my box so that each sub has its own airspace, so I'm going to need a seperate terminal cup for each sub. Would I wire it like this? (I didn't put the terminal cups in the diagram...but you get the point) This is the original diagram I found. I guess what I'm asking is, are both diagrams the same? Thanks! -
Help wiring from amp to subs
M1K3 replied to M1K3's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Thanks a ton both of you! My amp (hifonics) has two sets of positive and negatives...should I still have both wires coming out of the same positive and negative? -
I ordered two 12" SSDs with chrome blue dustcaps. I'll be sure to upload pics as soon as they get here =]
