It is always a good idea to look for major business's nearby and call and ask. Something along the lines of: Hi, this is Sean. I am looking for a room for 5/15 - 5/17 can you let me know what you have and what the Company X rate is for those days?

I only call for really strange requests. ie, Flying from Frankfurt to MSP. Layover in Paris. I want a less than 24hr layover so it is still considered a direct route, but as long as possible to fuck around. There is NO website you can do that on. Also some flights have seats locked. I unlock them on the phone or at least check before booking. I will NOT book a flight where I cannot book an exit row or bulkhead (when they are curtains only of course). Of course business class is fine Boss okayed business for both Asia & Europe.

The only caveat of course is last minute shit when you know getting fucked is part of the deal. Other than that I've never seen a price on any of those ridiculous sites I can't beat on my own either.

I've been fucked bad by Expedia. Learned the hardway. Try and change ANYTHING. Yikes

Book with one of those sites and miss a layover due to an act of god and you'll be shit outa luck.kayak sends you to the airline, but still you get treated better direct ALWAYS. Hotels are even worse. NEVER book with a service site. As for missing a connection, I can say one thing about thatn. Fuck connections. I only will do them if flying business class and then only international
