Not as good, but yet I nearly lol'd

Ultra low crime, per capita huge percentage of Fortune 500 companies, low cost of living and nice clean cities.

The worst list was not surprising either.

Only made it to number 4? BS. I suppose the weather scares off others. http://www.cnbc.com/id/101719133/page/1

Could just run a miniDSP then as well. $2 option for a volume knob. Ipad direct into miniDSP to amplifier. Cheaper than a headunit and WAY more settings possible.

All speakers need a cabinet designed for them. Ported in the 30Hz range will do nothing for mids. The baffle will also create all sorts of problems in the midrange. If you are looking to build your first set of speakers and crossovers you should really start with a well reviewed design that is on the web. Something from PE, Zaph, Jon Marsh etc, etc. Everything else you propose will be a waste of money. The exception can be if you do this all active, but that has a learning curve as well that doesn't come quickly.

I just use an analog volume pot in my boat, but have no use for a headunit since my source is never a CD. If you go that route, the Blue Velvet ALPS are bang for the buck a win.

If you mean PWX's then TERRIBLE idea. No application I've EVER seen has been good for those. What would be better, I know i am going to have to get into crossovers and such, dont have much experience working with crossovers.Pretty much anything. Those have nearly no place in any install ever. Also SUPER hard to make sound good (ie, crossovers aren't trivial). First thing you need to do before looking at any separates is to determine how you'd cross them over. And no, you "can't" use a car crossover at home.

If you don't have many hills, the preferred commuting bike here is a fixie

Faster? Sure. Until you crack 20+ road bike aerodynamics don't really slow you down though it is all rolling resistance. Unlike most Lance Armstrong wannabes the reality is also that fatter tires have less rolling resistance...until the air resistance trumps them. So a set of ultra skinnies on your mt bike may do you just as well. The rest depends on fit and body positioning. Of course if you run out of gear now, you'll really run out with a set of slicks on it. And yes, tires with NO TREAD at all are better on a road bike EVEN in water than those with. Something in the 28-32mm range is ideal. 32 being the most comfortable, but 28 probably being the quickest. Anything skinnier is for aero and you need to be humping for that to help. Of course, you can buy that thing and sell it for more obviously.

Only if you're going to have less bass than 2 Extremis's in a convertible You'll have the cone area advantage for a while. Single 5.25" sub ftw

Good, didn't realize the timing of my comments. Generically speaking fiberglass resin weakens an MDF box. Obviously with mat that probably isn't the case, but just so you know.

If it is for theatre you should be tuning in the mid to low teens. For music it is a different story altogether.

Less than 10 if you crimp on the adapter versus soldering.

Really it'd be better if you did it yourself, but you get the idea. And no, you really won't hear a difference. I used the technique to determine how much compression is okay for my music collection. Wanted to make sure I got that right before spending the time of burning over 3,000 cds. Figure the best way is to give someone specific instructions on how to burn what and hide it from me so I don't know. Then I use my ears to decide how much compression was acceptable to me. -

You completely misunderstood. I guarantee I can send you a CD with compressed and non-compressed and you won't be able to tell the difference. No way, no how. I'd cheat and re-rip them into wav so they take the same space so the only way you'll know is to listen. I think it is your first rodeo...that or you get bit by marketing more than most. So, now that you understood/stand my point was you are chasing the wrong things. Apply your energy elsewhere, it is the install that makes a difference not other pointless things. -
Headunit in that truck is all of 10 minutes.
-
I believe peng or I have that title. Bone stock and no factory upgrades on my audio. J ML was always stock, but the HK system in there I'd bet would score higher than Randal's truck in an SQ comp. Esky is stock too, current Bose stuff sucks. More than enough bass though.
