Thanks for the big write up though. Really put things into perspective. I have a faberware pan budget for my tools so I should expect faberware and not restaurant weight copper Mauviel

Touche. I think I don't want to experience your level of tools as I don't need another expensive addiction. I'm already bad enough with too many things. And what I buy will never make me money, will definitely save me money and more importantly sanity. My problem is as always scope creep. I am not good at being okay with wondering what something better would have been like. Then look at better and think the same things. Reality is the Craftsman would be an upgrade over a great majority of what I have. I just don't want to do that and then someday go aw fuck I "should have". If I buy the GW I could get a complete set that basically fills out my Hansen trays. Albeit somewhat stupid, it would make getting them all back at the end of a job more obvious which is worth more to me than a better tool. Worst tool is the one you can't find and that sure as hell ain't the tools fault. Spending the extra dough to buy SK over GW I can rationalize at 1/4" and 3/8" but not 1/2". Too many other priorities atm.

yes to all of that
-
Congrats, what will you be doing? sound test technician at Caterpillar's proving grounds in Peoria Il. I might actually see you professionally in the next year
-
I haven't had a "problem" with craftsmen sockets either and the full set of those includes 12 points and 6 for nearly the same price. I am also not eager to buy anything that is crap though
-
Not for sleds. I have a very limited set of 3/4" drive stuff, but it is way more convenient to use the socket than the breaker bar. Both due to length and of course being a ratchet. *none of what I am buying is for my sleds, just for general use which will include the sleds. Just moving my current 3/8" collection onto the sleds.
-
So seriously, this is what I should do? Seth, R2?
-
Gives me basically the CMan set in 6 pt only for similar price to the whole craftsman set.

And fuckign GW site won't list shit for details on what it includes. I can assume the extras are Deep 6,7,8, 20,21,22 Std 20,21,22 Deep 1/4", 5/16", 1" Std 1" That is 13. 44 + 13 is 57 so not sure what the other 6 are... I am okay without the ones listed, but don't "need" the wrench and $50 is $50

Term lab isn't exact either so don't sweat it. Just because something is a "standard" doesn't give it any credibility for being scientifically correct. What you need is relative repeatability with a somewhat linear FR. The rest doesn't really matter.
-
I think the 1/2" stuff is the least important in my box. Doesn't mean I don't want to buy some, just not spending $500 on SK for the 1/2". Willing to spend some dough for quality on the 1/4" & 3/8" though as what I have for those is awful. Gearwrench is still reasonable for 1/2" so....
-
So what would you do then?
-
Interesting. I have a migraine this morning as well. Fucking can't see SHIT. No idea what a cluster headache is but assume it is what I have x10
-
I need a 1"x1"x 2.5"+ (if it is way longer I can trim it, but have some space) piece of tube that is boxed on the ends. I want to rivet an oil caddy to my sled. Would allow me to rivet from both sides and not have a rubbing surface. I could get away with skinnier or slightly larger as well. Can find all sorts of square tube, but none that is capped. Considering it is to mount an $8 oil caddy I don't really want to pay someone to weld me something.
-
When I don't get "stuck" I am fine trudging along on whatever it is. ULTRA frustrated right now that I am basically waiting for these: Can't put the hood/plastics on until I get them...otherwise it has to come off. I ordered them a week ago. Tomorrow I'll rebuild the clutches and empty the oil reservoir. Anyone want some Polaris Gold 2 stroke oil? Have 2-3 quarts, lol.
-
Engine and chassis disassembly normally end up with ziplocs labeled with what they came off from. Box of those and a sharpie are key in the garage. Even holding the ziplocs is obnoxious. Have probably 4-5 other kitchen tupperware like things full of those. I should really probably just finish one project at a time....but I've NEVER been able to do that.
-
Speaking of, what do you use to keep track of lots of different nuts/bolts. Right now I have 2 snowmobiles, my car, and a bunch of furniture in pieces. Rotate through a caddy, an old espresso puck receptacle, a tin can with added mass that stands stable, a couple old tire wrapped ashtrays, to ziploc's when the project gets held up a bit. I've thought about some Muskie boxes, but don't really like the idea of a flip lid.
-
I am a huge fan of the screw bit adapter for the battery powered impact. Had to have a couple sets since the one I need is regularly already on the work bench or in a container.
-
Some of those sockets are fun ones. Don't see 32nds of an inch for sale anymore. Obviously I don't use them either.
-
This is what I want to clean up. 35 years of spending jack shit on tools, but collecting: Also a full set of approrpriate mediocre tools on my boat and in both sleds. You'll see the pictures of that later as their build threads will probably beat the Cadillac.
-
I can't rationalize this purchase by need....but my sanity in grabbing for the right tool has a value.
