How thick MDF for 18" sub for no box flex
explosivesound replied to explosivesound's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
What is the point of the glass then. Just for that last little bit? -
Im building my sub box but I dont know how thick to make the enclosure. Sub is 18" Atomic APX. Will be 6cubes net @32hz. How thick should the box be. I was thinking 1.50 all around and a 2.25 baffle. But I can go 3" all around if need be. Although it will be awhile before I run the reccommended 5000rms in the meantime Ill be running about 3000rms. I was told by another guy his AP(one step lower than the APX)12 Was still flexing his box with the 1.50. I will not be glassing the inside of the box so should I go 3 all around?

Port area WTF!!?? Please help me!
explosivesound replied to explosivesound's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
This is only 5sq.in of port more than that but for 6 cubes and an 18?! -
So Im building my box but am confused as hell. Ive read I need 12-14sq. in. of port per ^3 but the manufacturer insists on 40sq. in. x10" long @32hz. for a 6^3 net box for my 18. Its an Atomic APX. When I spoke with them they said dont listen to anybody build this exact. WTF?! Any idea why? Its rated at 5000rms. Would the larger port make it unload at low freq. with that much power and thats why they say what they say? Shouldnt it have massive port noise?! Im so confused. Someone please straighten me out on why they want it EXACTLY as they say and yet the port area doesnt make sense?

Enclosure help Please so I can get building!
explosivesound replied to explosivesound's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Even though the port is 10" long would the 40 sq. in x 10 long still be just 40" of port area or do I multiply the 40" by something to figure out my port area. 40sq. in. seems tiny! -

Ok its 6 cubes net. Now I have to figure out the port (slot) Atomic says to do what they say period. The port area is suppose to be 40 sq."x10"long. How do I figure out what equals 40 Sq. ". Do I for example do 8"tall and 5" wide since 8x5 is 40? Then 10" long/deep? -

Ive been told through another post I need to stick to Atomics enclosure reccommendation to get the most out of my APX 18 the enclosure info says sub and port displacement is already figured in their equation which is APX18-ported 6.0ft3 (40six10”long) ( 32Hz)=5000w (SB) So do I figure 6 cubes as if it was sealed then do the port to fit their req.? and I dont know how to read thier port rec. I see a 10" long port, 6" wide, but whats the 40. or is it 6" in height? Please help so I can get this box built! Or if someone wants to give me an easy out and tell me exact outside measurements (.75 MDF.) I have up to 50" in width, 25" in height and 19" depth. Thanks guys!!!

Power handling in different boxes
explosivesound replied to explosivesound's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Its for daily! So can I just do a 20^3 box for my 1 18 and lower my power? I do not have an amp yet -
Power handling in different boxes
explosivesound replied to explosivesound's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
Lookin like 147.5 on the port area. Thats from 12.8^3 gross and that brings it down to about 10.3 ^3 - sub and bracing. The problem is I really have 26.95^3 to fill. I guess I can do a 2nd sub but I dont really want to. Can I just make a stupid monstrous ported box for my 1 18 and just not give it too much power? Or is that not going to work? -
I have an 18" Atomic APX and am about to build the box. Atomic reccommends 6 cubes at 32hz. with 5000rms. Im doing a wall thats about 10 cubes at 32hz. With the extra cubes how much power should I run to it?
-
Just starting my build but I need to know about the box. Ive seen sub up port back sub forward port forward, sub up port up. I assume any combo will work but I want to verify. I want to do sub forward port up. IT would be the same as port forward but the port opening would be up instead of forward. So I guess it would sort of be like an L. Thats the best way I can explain. I need the port firing where the rear deck would be and the sub facing forward. The back of the back seat is being removed and replaced with the box. The sub will face forward in the middle, and on both sides the MDF will be foamed and clothed so two (though small) people can fit in the back seat! I dont really have the room for the port to fire forward like that, so I figured why not port up and remove the rear deck! Any ideas or suggestions?

Well I spoke with RE and Atomic. THis is an atomic APX motor and basket with an 05 RE XXX Recone kit. The APX is rated for 5000rms but the XXX only 1600rms. Atomic said they will recone it correctly so it can handle power like its suppose to. However I am waiting to hear from where I bought this at to see If I can get a refund since they said it was completely RE. Then Im going to take the money and buy the Atomic APXX18 straight from atomic with a 4" coil and the motor is 1 inch bigger! If I dont get the refund Ill run it till it blows up and get it reconed by Atomic. Even if I dont get the APXX this should still get rediculous! Ill update this as soon as I find out tomorrow!

stetson amplifiers.
explosivesound replied to high_score_1's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
To my knwoledge Stetsom is one of the best amp makers there are. I believe they are very spendy though. Alan Dante with a DD9918Z put down over 180DB with a pair of their amps. I think Sundown is the way to go though they are very economical for the power they put out, and they are very reliable and have build quality! -
It has the same basket as the 05 RE XXX 18 and atomic APXX 18. I think thats an atomic motor?!
