Hello, One of my friend is building a small studio for a customer. He already has eveything for recording sessions, but he needs a complete setup to listen to the final results. He's thinking of an amp (like the Behringer EP2000 or EPX, I don't know) and a 3 way system : 2 subs(10 or 12"), 2 mids and 2 tweeters. He will build the boxes. The system he will use for recording is too "neutral" for listening sessions. So he's looking for something simple and not too expensive. I want to order from parts-express or madisound.com ONLY. Can you help me choose something complete please ? There are so much speakers to choose ! He mostly listen to reggae music, some rap and maybe zouk ! So, he needs big bass and midbass. He wants a sound like something you can have at home. The room is small, and the speakers will be put in 2 "holes" already made in the front wall. I saw differentspeaker kits with their crossovers, but it is impossible to choose without any advice. and none of them include 10" or 12" subs ! We love big bass around here and maybe an 8" sub would be too weak. Can I get a set of 2 -way speakers (like this onehttp://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=302-976 )and simpy add a sub to the system. I think he has what he needs for crossovers but he can add a Behringer crossover too (more money to spend !). Budget : let's say $800 for everything (the amp costs $300). So, $500 for the speakers. Shipping is not included yet. He is in a hurry !

Hi guys, I currently run a Fi BTL N2 12" on a Sundown saz 3000 amp. I have no problem with the electrical, even if I know I may not push all the watts this amp can deliver ! My box was designed by Bromo of Eclectic Design (or something like that) : 2.1 ft3 with a slot port (32 hz tuning) firing through the (driver) side. The sub is firing up. The box is well braced too. It sounds good, but I want more output ! I can have another box built easily, and I already own two 4" flared (on both ends) ports. Those ports are in a 3.2 ft3 box used for a Soundstream XXX 15", for now. But I can get it back fast. This box may be too big for the 12" btl. What do you think about it ? I need some suggestions on a new box. It can have slot port or round ones. The car is a 4 doors Toyota Auris hatchback, and I feel like too much bass is trapped in the back of the car ! I had a box with a slot port, with port and sub firing up, and I did not like it too much. It was not loud at all. It was with SSA subs (a 15" Icon and later a 15" Xcon). I tried a box with the 4" ports firing to the side and it was much better. Do you think it would be better to have the box above the rear seats ? Right now it is just under them, but I don't know if it is imortant. I'm waiting on suggestions. Thanks.

No no no ! No wall for me ! It's cool to look at in other's cars, but I don't want that in mine ! -
That will let him have a killer system! But I don't think he'll be ok with that decision ! We'll talk about that with him later tonight. Do you think he needs an amp as powerful as the Behringer EP 2000 ? I don't know if he will be able to find a smaller amp, or a home audio amp for $300.

for 1200 watts ? Maybe a second battery or a better on under the hood, but the HO alt seems a little overkill ?! Let him play with the DMM first. And we'll know !

Pairing the Right Amp w/ Speakers
Notorious97200 replied to burko's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
Why do you want to run so much speakers ? And and so much super tweeters ?! do you have speakers in the rear doors, or in the rear hatch ? You don't need them at all ! Like said above, get a good component set with its passive filter, and you will be good to go ! Go to some local shops, and try to listen to all the sets you can. Then, come back to the forum to tell us what you think about what you've heared. You will receive other advices and you will be able to make a right choice.,I hope so. You have a btl and a good amp, don't go cheap on the front speakers : IMO it's the heart of a system. You don't need to lost an arm for them, but don't look only at the cheapest ones, please ! You can turn the bass off and still have a good sound, but you can't turn the fr speakers off to listen to just the bass !!! Good luck ! -
Not for mixing. He has all his studio equipments already. This is for listening to the final product, as if he was home. He has visited Tuff Gong Records in Jamaïca (it's Bob Marley studio) and he saw they had (2) 15" subs just for the listening sessions, with mids and tweeters, of course. So, he wants something like that !!! But in 12" ! He doesn't need something top notch, just a good stereo system !

I have a voltmeter permanently in the car, and I check the rear batt regularly with another one. My car is a Toyota hatchback. I have pics in my gallery, and a build log here. I never said it was not loud, just that I want more output from it. ! I like to try different boxes for my subs. And I change subs often Don't get me wrong : the N2 is a super great woofer ! It seems to be louder than the SSA Xcon 15" I had on the same amp (it was a Sundown saz 1500). It's loud and sound good. Don't worry, you'll love it for sure. But a lot of my friends run big 18" woofers or several 15" , so I can't compare to them ! -
Thanks for your answers, guys ! I will tell him to buy something easier ! Maybe a set of Bose acoustimass, I jsut remember there is an authorized Bose dealer here. I have one set on a Marantz amplifier, and I like it for 8 years (I bought it used !!!).

No, the front battery is a big big Varta one ! My voltage stay strong. I know my problem comes from the fact I listen to a lot of shitty mp3s, mostly reggae music, so the bass is not as loud as on rap songs on original cds. On some songs it is so loud I must turn the bass down, but it's not so often ! I need to buy more cds ! And our choice is small here. I think I will order some on the web. -
I told him to just buy some speakers locally, but he was so pleased with a set of Aura midbass you (at SSA) told me to buy for him !!! I won't say he wants studio monitors, but just something to listen to music like anyone at home. Do you think a subwoofer is really needed in this application ? Or can he just run good mids, and tweeters ? We don't have a lot of choice around here. High end JM Lab (Focal) , Cabasse, ...and entry level speakers like Jamo,... So, we need to order something. For $500 what would you do ? He has good skills in wood working, so it's not a problem to build enclosures. I saw some sets on madisound or PE with all the instructions for the speakers and the boxes. They seem good, but I don't know.

Thanks for the input on the amp. I may buy one like that for a "studio" setup very soon !
-
Wow ! I like it, but the only Ferrari I could drive is the new FF. I'm too tall for those smallis cars !!!
-
I got a local guy wants me to make his car " sound like mine" If he doesn't take the sub in the deal Ill try local then probably put it on the forums. Id hate to waste my great box. Im probably moving to a pair of sundown 10s or maybe a single xcon something. Xcons are freakin pricey for me. If you can't sell it locally, get another one and just sell the box if it's a good one. 2 Dcons : you will love them !
-
When you add port and sub volume, you will not have 2 cu ft net. (if your box is already a 2 cu ft gross volume). A 32 Hz tuning for a small box require an extra long port, and will take much room in the box. Go with what 98GMC told you, you will be very happy !

Your pics are really small ! What happened ?!

newb to car audio, i need amp help. BADLY lol
Notorious97200 replied to zshortcut's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
You have 500 watts from that amp ? You can use 2000 watts for those 2 subs ! You should notice an improvment in output with 4 times the power !!! Look at those : Kicker 1500, Alpine mrp 2000, Stetsom 1k5 or 2k5 (2 Ohms models), 2 Alpine pdx 1000,...even the Audiopipe 3000 ! Those are not cheap, but you have very nice subs, it would be a pitty to have a POS amp ! Save some money, and use the amp you have until you're ready to buy a better one ! Witout your budget, it is hard to tell you where to look at seriously. -

Notorious97200 replied to Notorious97200's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
I don't think my car will like it ! I don't have enough money to run a better battery upfront, for now, and I can't afford a custom HO alt (I'd love to). They don't seem to make any for my car. And I don't really have room for a big box and a battery in the back. It's hard to fit a 15" sub and box and batt in that cargo area, that's why I took a 12" sub. Ryan, I will contact you for a new box for that btl. I have 2 psp 4" ports already !
