well, thinking about getting in trouble with the wife
nigel replied to nigel's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
couldn't find them on their website, if you could give me a link to one, then I'll check it out -
hey all. Well, signed up on here a while ago, and haven't really posted. Well, I'm working midnights right now and thought I'd take the time to finally get back into it. As for about me/my vehicle/set up. Right now, I am running: Head Unit: Alpine cda-7998 (love it, phenomenal and does everything I could ask) mids/highs: Clarion SRS-1686 component set (6.5" midbass woven glass cone, 3/4" tweeter silk dome)(very impressed, but then, my ears like the sound of woven glass fiber cones...) Subwoofers: currently (2) clarion SW 1251 12" (single 4 ohm VC, 350 watts RMS) Enclosure: 4 cubic foot net dual slot ported tuned to 32 Hz, common chamber (built in two hours, while the littlee guy was napping, as the wife was at work) Amplifiers: JBL GTO 601.1 (for subwoofers) and 75.2 (for component set) All of this is in my '03 chev s-10 extended cab. As for the subs, well, I had an OZ Audio Matrix Elite 12.4 in there for the longest time (two years in this truck, half a year in a previous truck, and a year in a car beforee that), still have the OZ, still love it. However I was getting a big itch to try/test something new, and was at my local stereo shop, and the salesguy (being a good friend of mine, who was going to quite his job in a couple of days) says, hey why don't you buy these and give them a test, and then told me he'd give them to me at cost since the boss wasn't around.... Well, I'm a sucker, so I get hooked, line sinker and all, and well, I've now had these in for a couple of months, and have to say, I'm thoroughly surprised/impressed. Although I'm sure I'll at some point put the OZ back in, I am currently enjoying pushing these to their limits, and I must say, they can handle the abuse fairly well. I also still have a JL VR 5.25 CSi component set kicking around that I had in a previous vehicle, that I plan on making enclosures for to turn into bookshelfes for the garage. Oh, and advance apoligies, if I miss the letter "e" in words, as I have a toddler who likes to pop buttons off of the laptop, and it went missing on me....

well, finally got ahold of the AA distributor for canada, well, after conversion on the fi ssd, the AA Chaos is $100 more, and it'll only be ~$10 more for shipping on the SSD, considering brokerage/duties, the SSD would still be ~$70 cheaper (more or less) so, looks like, unless there's another serious contender out there in it's price bracket, I will if I'm lucky, possibly order one for christmas. We'll see. oh, and nick, at 800 watts rms, I would say it should be more than "entry level" the fi X series would be entry level with a 250 watt rms rating. IMO -

forgot about mach 5, will have to check them out. just checked them out, couldn't find the mj18-m just the IXL 18 and it only comes in dual 2 ohm coils so it won't work (need 2 ohm final ) too bad though. oh, and as for the SA presale, one little line in that first post says - for US residents only - so I couldn't anyway. -

Oh, she's generally pretty good about it. The only issue I can forsee being maybe that I just bought a pair of 12's about 2 months ago (bored with them already), oh that and we're trying to finish our basement, saving for a trip to PEI, oh and I forgot to mention, she is now pregnant with what will be our second child, so, that's why looking at doing this as my christmas gift, she's usally agreeable, as I buy my own gift every year (I'm picky and don't want to end up getting crap). Any opinions though between those two? or another 18" that might work? Sefugi - looked at those, but I think I really want to go with an 18", thanks though as they look like they could do some damage. -

friend of mine snapped that picture as he was calling the power company and fire dept. Said there were about half a dozen people standing about 10 ft away just watching. Also said about a minute after that pic it was dripping black melted metal and spitting like crazy, that's when he took off... -
For screws I usually use either a 1 and 1/4" or 1 and 1/2" #8 wood screw. The threads tend to be tighter/closer together (more winds) than a drywall screw which gives you more surface holding the screw in. If your enclosure is made of MDF remember to pre-drill your holes (slightly thinner than the screw) otherwise you will split the wood and compromise it's integrety. I personally have never used a line driver. But if you absolutely want to have one, like said above, stick with something tried tested and true, for your peace of mind. Again, for RCA's, a decent pair of twisted or shielded can make all the difference in the world, depending on ambient noise in the vehicle, as well as where they are run. I generally try to run my RCA's on the opposite side of the vehicle from any power wires. Personally I am running Streetwirs LN2 series rca's they are braided. I have two runs of them (one for mid/high amp, one for sub amp) and they cost me $20 each. I wouldn't suggest buying anything too expensive though.

bunch of guys on carstereos.org/soundillusions.net were talking about. This is way back now. since it went down, elitecaraudio.com went down, well, I needed to find somewhere other than just the audio section of s10forum to get my audio fix. And since I have way too many financial responsibilities right now, I must live vicariously through reading up on others purchases/progress online.

well, was bored today, th little guy was out running through the sprinkler, so.... pulled the two clarion 12's out, started putting the OZ ME 12 back in. Need to get the amps/wiring all back in to place. Cosidering bugging the wife into maybe letting me get either an AA chaos 18 or a fi SSD 18 for christmas. Never ran an 18 before, so who knows.

Do you use a remote knob?
nigel replied to mrbojang's topic in Amplifiers / Head Units / Processors / Electrical
never used one. Have subwoofer level control on my head unit, use it if I have to. Other than that, st th gains and forget it, good enough for me. If I need to turn it down ral quick, that's what the mute button on my deck is for. Works minty. -

I know I have a car audio addiction when......
nigel replied to Aaron Clinton's topic in General Audio
spend the majority of a 12 hour midnight shift killing your eyes reading page after page of car audio forums and manufacturer websites, and then going back to post that in this thread to realize you've allowed too much time to pass since your last post and can no longer edit...... realizing that the first component set you ever bought that's in the storage room has more sentimental value than any gift your wife has bought you. spend two months convincing your in-laws to give you an extra $200 to go towards your brother-in laws christmas gift because you can't get a decent sub and amp for the amount they initially wanted to spend..... -
cops here are too busy looking for ricers to bug me. drive an import with after market rims and they're all over ya. I drive a truck, I get ignored. Damn it's nice.

took my son to his first car audio comp. at 18 months old. bought a pair of new subs, just because I got them for dealer cost, even though I was still satisfied with the system I had.... Can build a dual ported enclosure during my toddler's afternoon nap, then wake him up so he can see what daddy built... Ask the wife for forgiveness when th UPS guy shows up to hand her a 30 lb box containing a new subwoofer she had no clue I bought online... (oh boy, she was not happy about this one) decided to build a box for a 10" sub I had sitting in the garage to use as my computer speaker sub, just because I could, and besides, those two sheets of extra MDF in the garage aren't going to use themselves. A friend comes over to show you his new amp, and you install it using the spare wiring you have on hand. Spend many sleepless nights designing an enclosure for a friends vehicle. The local "custom shop" installer has you design and install his new system because he thinks you're more knowledgeable than he is........
