this weekend was awesome, my wife rolled her ankle and tore a ligament slipping off of the curb of our driving while carrying our two year old... Took her to the hospital and had to pretty much chase the kids by myself for the weekend... Got absolutely nothing that needed to be done, done, other than mowed the back yard while the kids were outside playing, and now I'm on midnights the next two weeks, so, I'll be asleep during the day, and unable to get sh!t done. Life is just f#cking great.

Do I have this right? (sealed/ported question)
nigel replied to Dan208's topic in SPL & SQ / Fabrication
remember, if you go to two of them, not only are you going to double your surface area, but you will then run that amp at 2 ohms, thus upping your power, which could make the difference. The general rule as I always thought, was that, going to a properly built ported could gain you 3 db, or doubling you cone area will gain the 3 db, or dubling power can. These are in theory, in reality, doing any of these, in real world may not actually get you this gain due to environmental factors. I would think that even though you would go from one ported to 2 sealed, you would also be upping the power output, this could make a difference, may not.... And, if the Dcons aren't designed to be optimal in a sealed enclosure, then that could make a difference as well... -
you didn't want to give another set of the z's a try? Seems to me that sundown is being really good in taking care of you, and offering a full refund, that generates a lot of respect for the company in my eyes. just saying.

from reading on S10forum, guys there are liking sub up passenger side, port side firing on driver's side.
-
were those subs right up against the back of your seat? If so, then that could be why you were so unhappy. With a box like that in a reg cab, you really need to make sure to leave room for your cones movement. Also, you say you didn't design/tune the enclosure, and were unhappy so you returned the subs. But, if you didn't design the box, are you certain it wasn't the box that was the issue? Proper design accounts for a lot. I think doing (2) 8" drivers in a proper ported enclosure, has a lot of potential. If done right.

good. That was one of my main conceerns, was how is the sound of these style enclosures, but so far, everyone who has one that's commented has said they enjoy the sound of these boxes as well. Looks like this is the style I'll be building, but my main concern is 43.5 sq. inches of port area enough so as to avoid port chaffing? I used to use an online calculator to show this, but for the life of me I cannot remember what website it was on. Had a calculator to show port velocity, by putting in size of driver, one way linear xmax, rms power, and port area would show velocity and what number to keep it under so as to avoid hearing it.

Okay, have done some reading around, and from what I'm seeing is that guys are getting good results in x-cab s-dimes with an up-firing sub/ side firing port design. So, I'm thinking I might give this a try. vehicle: 03 chev s-10 subwoofer: RE Audio SEx 15 (dual 4 ohm coils) Amplifier: JBL GTO 601 (600 watts @ 2 ohms) Looking at doing an enclosure out of .75" MDF Outside measurements: 15" height * 40" width * 16" depth Slot port: 14.5" wide * 3" high (port area of 43.5") * 23.5" long (tuning ~33.5 Hz) Net enclosure volume: 3.6 ft^3 Big question I have is, will 43.5" of port area be enough, or do I need more to prevent terrible port noise? Thanks for your opinions in advance.

ok, the sub is here, now to get some wood, and build a box.... I hate packaging peanuts (my 2 year old got them everywhere...)

well, being who I am (very inquisitive by nature) I constantly find myself loomking at audio equipment, and as such, I always wonder to myself, hey that would be neat to have etc... So, I keep looking at 15 inch subs lately for some reason, and more specifically, at the RE SEX15D4, has anyone on here have experience with it? I just may, and a big "may" be able to convince the wife to let me buy one..... maybe... It'll be powered by a JBL GTO 601.1 amp. Again "if I can convince the wife" Thanks for the advice in advance, even if it is for naught...

for my buddy's integra when we did a floor, we just took the carpet out of the hatch (was a piece by itself) and traced it. If your carpet comes out like this, you can try this, just to save a step.

Well, as some may know (from my thread in the subwoofer/speaker forum) I have an RE Audio seX 15D4 coming my way. So, I am in need of building an enclosure for it. So, this will be going in the back of a Chev S-10, and will be powered by a JBL 601.1 amp (receiving ~600 watts RMS) This will not be for competitions of any kind, however I do enjoy listening to music, as such I want something that has the ability to sound decent and yet still get fairly loud for just general driving around use. So, for dimensions, I can go up to 40.5" wide by 18" high by 14" deep (outside measures). I am looking to do a ported enclosure. Not decided on whether I should go slot port or round, so looking for opinions there. I did some pre-calculations on my end already, and with using my max dimensions heres what I got. Sub facing forward (centered in enclosure) with ports facing up Box outside dimensions 40.5" wide by 18" high by 14" deep. Dual round ports (4" wide will this be enough port area or will it create too much resistance/noise?) Ports would be 10.526" long (each) This would get me (after subtracting wall thickness, port displacement and sub displacement) a net enclosure volume of 4.332 cubic ft and tune to 34 Hz. Then I planned on adding two braces (made of wood) which would take up 0.0537 cubic ft each, so after the two, net volume would be 4.2246 Cubic feet. My main questions are: 1) will (2) 4 inch round ports be sufficient port surface area so as to prevent port noise? 2) is sub forward ports up a good configuration? As this is the best way I see of doing this. 3) Does this enclosure look good? Any opinions greatly appreciated. Thank you.

looks to me you did a pretty good job from what I can tell. If you're happy with the result then that's all that matters. Have fun with the setup.

well, did some looking around and saw only good reviews on the SEX line of Subs, and couldn't really find anything else in the same price range that overly appealed to me. Managed to get the price down to $159.99 as well, so after shipping/duties/brokerage/taxes it comes out to just over $230 at my door. So not too bad, especially considering when there was an RE dealer here in town, an SE 15 was ~$400. Once it comes in I'll likely be looking for ideas as to an enclosure, as well as taking pics and giving my own review. Will keep everyone posted.

up to $175.00 US before shipping etc.

The SSD line would be the one near what I'd be looking for, but their site won't give me any info on that line for some reason.
-
yeah, but budget is the big issue. Too many other things that needs spending on right now. And being in canada, shipping/duties/brokerage/taxes crossing the border play a huge role. The RE SEX 15 is 174.99 after shipping/duties/brokerage/taxes it comes out to 249.48 (approx 253.09 CDN) Although those SA's do look good...

Well, got the green light from the wifey, wondering though if this is the sub for me. Looking at getting it to replace the OZ ME 12 that I currently have. Will be run off of a JBL 601 amp (rated for 580 watts rms) Would be installed in a vented enclosure, I personally like tuning in the 30-34 Hz range. Will build the enclosure my self to suit the driver. Going in the back of an x-cab S-10, can go up to ~4-5 cubes no sweat if needed. What does every one think. I like something that can get fairly loud while still maintaining decent sound quality. Not going to be used for comps (not interested in competing), just use it to listen on my drive to work and back, and when driving around. Can anyone think of another 15" sub that comes in at $175.00 or less that is comparable or even better? Not really looking to buy used but maybe for the right sub. Would need to be able to be hooked up at 2 ohms and run off of ~600 watts as I'm not looking to buy a new amp at this time...

Can I do anything special with these component speakers???
nigel replied to Shogen's topic in Subwoofers / Speakers
the whole reason for the rather poor response I would assume is due to the fact that likely the values differ from x-over set to another. Whenever your company is based on just getting the cheapest b-stock you can find and then sticking your name on it, then you wind up with no two "same model" parts actually winding up the same. They can't tell you the values or slopes because they just don't know. Those x-overs probably have over 100 variations depending on what went on the line when. I'd say try running them active. Use the front output from your deck to go to the tweeters and the rear output to go to the mid ranges. Use the high pass filter on your rear outputs set at what you want them to stay above and then use the lpf on whichever amp you choose to run the midranges. Start around what thy gave you say in the 2.8 to 3.2 KHz range, and then use the high pass on the amp to the tweats and set around the same, then go from there for changing slopes (if you can) as well as what frequency (up/down) to get the sound to where you want. -
glad to hear you're happy with the the turn out. I built a custom box for a pair of these a while back that a friend put in his car. They slammed like a mofo... Post up some pics once you've got it all done.

this amp here he's down to $275.00 shipped I believe... 1500 watts @ 2 ohms this sub here http://www.soundsolutionsaudio.com/store/products/15%22-SSA-XCON-D1%7B47%7DD2.html for $389.00 1750 watts rms and available in dual 1 ohm coils, wired in series for 2 ohm at amp. total is $664.00 before shipping on the sub. This would not be a system to laugh at by any means.

I've been running JBL amps for 4 or 5 years now. No issues. And I'm not easy on them either. They handle abuse very well. JBL has a good name for their amps, and from my personal experience, they earned it. I emailed a question to JBL about a month or so ago, about one of my amps (a five year old product, well out of it's warranty) and they got back to me the next day, no problems, with a very nice explanation. I definitely would not complain about their customer service. I however have absolutely no experience with any Sundown products, and as such, cannot make any comment on that company. Have seen multiple people with pioneer stuff who liked it, had a pioneer deck, worked well and did what it was supposed to, however, no experience with their amps, so cannot comment there either.

I work somewhere where you don't snitch, Unless someones life is at risk.. Just plain doesn't happen. If you do, you get run out real fast, or make your life a living hell. But the rumour mill, well, it runs overtime, everyone has to know everyones business. And people don't care about truth, just popular myth.

So, I knew starting to read more on car audio again would get me in trouble, so.... Looking at convincing my wife to let me maybe get an 18" sub for myself for christmas. This will be going into my extended cab chev s-10. Will be using a JBL GTO 601.1 amp to push it (600 watts at 2 ohms) (reason for the amp is, I already have it, and if I can even manage my wife to OK the purchase of a new sub she will never go for ok'ing a new amp as well) Looking at doing a 6 cubic foot enclosure slot ported tuned around 32 Hz Was looking at either the Ascendant audio Chaos 18 (dual 1 ohm coils) or possibly the Fi SSD 18 (again dual 1 ohm coils) Both call for up to 800 watts rms, and will work in ported enclosures in the 6 to 10 cubic foot range. first question: is there an online dealer for ascendant or do you have to contact them directly for pricing? if anyone knows.... second: Does anyone here have any direct experience with either sub, and what is their thoughts? third: Can anyone think of any other 18" subs that fit the bill (run at 2 ohms, off of 600 watts, in a 6 cubic foot box tuned around 32 Hz) that would be in the same price range as the fi SSD ($229.00) fourth: if you can think of another, what is the reasoning behind the suggestion? As for why I'm looking at doing this, well, I have ran single 10's and 12's, dual 10's and 12's, hooked up and listend to 15's in others vehicles. Currently have a single twelve in the truck (switched back today from dual 12's) and quite frankly, I'm bored and need something to tinker with. My ADHD is acting up and I'm going stir crazy....
